›Fall 2009 Rush Schedule

Coming Soon

›What is Rush?

Rush is a week filled with free food, great events, and a lot of fun. It’s a time where men interested in joining a Fraternity can get to know the brothers of the house, check out the house itself, and make a lot of new friends. At the end of this week an invitation to join will be extended to those privileged young men we feel will best fit into our brotherhood and be able to gain the most value from it. It’s important to remember that attending Rush events carries no obligation or fees, it’s simply an opportunity for you to get to know us and check out what we’re about. If you are unsure about anything, have any questions, or feel a little lost make sure you contact one of our Rush Chairs, Nicholas Shook and Kevin Lin.

›Why Sigma Pi?

Joining a Fraternity is one of the most important decisions you will ever make, so it’s important to choose the right one. Our house can offer you things no other organization can. From a close knit brotherhood to leadership opportunities, the ideals of Sigma Pi focus on friendship and success. We know both academics as well having a good time are important to any college student, and as a result we make sure every brother in the house has the right resources to do both. When so many of the brothers of Sigma Pi have GPA’s above 3.5 and are in programs from Haas to EECS, it’s easy to see why the old stereotypes of “frat boys” are no longer valid. There’s not just “one kind of guy” who can join Sigma Pi, anyone who’s interested in developing their character, improving their scholarship, and increasing their success is welcome. Here at Sigma Pi you will…

  • Have the support system of friends to help make the adjustment to college.
  • Have excellent scholastic resources available.
  • Learn valuable leadership skills and have the chance to practice them as a chapter officer or committee member.
  • Be encouraged to get involved in campus organizations and student activities.
  • Participate in a wide variety of chapter activities including intramurals, game day events, and Homecoming.
  • Help others through community service and philanthropic events.
  • Be exposed to career opportunities through interaction with fraternity alumni from across California and the United States.
  • Be joining a Greek community rich in tradition and excellence.
  • Simply put, be joining one of the best Greek fraternities on the campus and by far the best in the United States.

›The Advantages of Being a Sigma Pi

  • Advantage 1: Academics
  • The Academic portion of your university career is one significant determinant in your future success. The primary purposes of the fraternity system is to encourage and develop high scholastic achievement among its members. Just over 50% of students in university end up graduating. However, amongst fraternity men, your chances of graduating successfully increase to over 70%! Fraternity members help each other to succeed by providing study resources to one another, having study hours and holding study nights (often with sororities), and by providing role models of successful older brothers who have experience regarding what to do and what not to do. Brothers are always willing to give you tips on classes they have taken, proofread your paper, or give you advice on what to do for your given major or program. Iota Chapter hosts a number of successful and competitive students, including students majoring in business, engineering, economics, political science, and mathematics, to name a few.

  • Advantage 2: Social Life
  • While we know academics are important and obviously hold them as our number one priority, no college experience is complete without a healthy dose of social life. Our Fraternity is all about friendship, brotherhood, and bonding, and there’s no better time that these things can be cultivated than at all of our social events. Besides being a social experience itself (being in an active community), the invitationals, brotherhood trips, exchanges, sorority study nights, and of course the best parties in Berkeley (from our big parties such as Galaxy, to our date parties and our kickbacks) provide students with an unrivaled social experience. College is difficult but the brothers of Sigma Pi know how to have a good time and create an exceptionally enjoyable atmosphere where you and your other friends can have an amazing time.

  • Advantage 3: Community Service
  • Usually, the only way a person gets involved in a philanthropic event, is to do it with a group of people. On your resume, you need volunteer experience. The fraternity is an excellent way for you to donate your time for a good cause and have fun with your brothers. There is a Philanthropy chair every semester who will set up things such as blood drives and other philanthropic events on campus so that you may partake. Additionally, there is the Altruistic Campus Experience (or ACE) project that is unique to Sigma Pi and is required of each chapter every semester. At these events the brothers work together to make the campus a better place for everyone by engaging in community service.

  • Advantage 4: Athletics
  • Each fraternity participates in the numerous competitive sports in the Campus Intramural Leagues and in interfraternal sports like the Greek Games. It’s difficult to get a group of people on your own to play team intramural sports, Ultimate Frisbee, or to get a softball game together on a Sunday afternoon. Fraternities offer all of this along with the pride of sportsmanship, team spirit, and competition! Recently, Iota Chapter has fielded intramural basketball and soccer teams that have been among the top teams in their respective leagues, and a co-ed softball team with the ladies of Sigma Kappa.

  • Advantage 5: Leadership
  • In the fraternity, you will be "in charge" of an event or a duty. Everyone in the fraternity is a leader, whether you’re an officer, an executive, on a committee, or just a participant. You will learn by doing. You’ll learn how to manage a budget, run effective meetings, speak in public, motivate others … skills that will help you in university and throughout your life. These days it takes more than just a degree to get a good job - it takes leadership experience. While fraternity alumni are only 2% of the population, they are:

    • All but two United States Presidents since 1825
    • Seventy-one percent (71%) of those listed in Who's Who in America.
    • Eighty-five percent (85%) of the Fortune 500 Executives
    • Seventy-six percent (76%) of current United States senators and congressmen
    • One hundred of the 158 cabinet members since 1900
    • Nineteen of the 47 Supreme Court justices since 1910

  • Advantage 6: Brotherhood
  • Brotherhood is the foundation of the fraternity experience. Every man contributes to this aspect. Brotherhood combines the concept of individualism within the framework of mutual cooperation. As a fraternity brother you will form friendships unlike any found in other organizations. Brotherhood is not conformity. No fraternity is made up of members who are exactly alike. By choosing to become a member of a fraternity, you will meet brothers who grow to become your closest friends, those who will cheer you on when you’re successful and who will support you when the going gets tough.

  • Advantage 7: Networking
  • So, let’s say you’ve graduated or are just looking for a summer job. Now what? In today’s economy and job market, it’s going to take more than looking at wanted-ads and job postings. You need to network with people. The fraternity is one of the best ways to do just that. Not only will you have numerous brothers from your own chapter and other chapters that you will personally meet, Sigma Pi has over 86,000 worldwide initiates. Using the resources of fraternity members like alumni, you'll have thousands of people who you already have an instant connection with. The resources of alumni are unlimited and can not only help you get a job or fund your ideas but they can give you uncommon real-world advice on how to succeed.

  • Advantage 8: Traveling
  • The Brotherhood Chair plans events and trips year-round. Our house goes to Vegas, Tahoe, Tijuana and more, and best of all, almost all the expenses are paid by the fraternity. In addition to traveling with the house, let’s say you’re planning a trip to another city in North America. You need a place to stay, but you don’t want to spend too much dough. Being a brother of Sigma Pi allows you to travel to other fellow chapter houses (and there are nearly 120 of them) to meet brothers and have a place to stay for free! Sometimes, one chapter will get a bunch of guys together and plan a road trip and stay at several chapters along the way. And when you arrive, although you may have never met these brothers before, you have a fraternal bond, and you’re more than just a guest in their home, you’re instant friends. All this mushy brotherhood stuff may be hard to believe at first, but it’s genuine.

  • Advantage 9: Prestige
  • Not many (if any) other oganizations can offer you the resources, the unbreakable bonds of brotherhood, and the best social experience on campus, and as a result being a brother of Sigma Pi is both a priviledge and an honor. As you can see around campus, and especially amongst the greek community, Sigma Pi is a very well known organization and our influence is widespread. We are known among the Berkeley community for our amazing basement (set up like a club), our successful brothers, and our insane big parties (like Galaxy). There's no doubt about it, being a brother of Sigma Pi is something to identify with and be proud of.

We invite you out to experience the difference and see for yourself why we stand above the rest.
