animus -i m. [the spiritual or rational principle of life in man]. More specifically: (1) [the seat of feeling , the heart]; 'animi causa', [for pleasure]; loc. (or genit.) 'animi', [at heart]. (2) [character, disposition]; as a trait of character (esp. in plur.) [courage, spirit, vivacity]; also [pride, arrogance]. (3) [the seat of the will, intention]: 'habeo in animo', [I am resolved]. (4) [the seat of thought, intellect, mind, memory, consciousness].

It is courage that defines our character, be it in striving for success, standing up for those in need of help, or sharing faith.  I am ever thankful for those who have shared their courage with me, for it makes me a better person.  Here are some quotes I've found.

Deuteronomy 31
6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.

Mark Twain
It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare

Clare Booth Luce
Courage is the ladder on which all the other virtues mount.

Anais Nin
Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage.

John Quincy
Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.

Amelia Earhart
Courage is the price that Life exacts for granting peace.

Cicero
Live as brave men; and if fortune is adverse, front its blows with brave hearts.

Corra Harris
The bravest thing you can do when you are not brave is to profess courage and act accordingly.

Eddie Rickenbacker
Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared.

Euripides
A coward turns away, but a brave man's choice is danger.

Harold Wilson
Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death.

Joshua 1:7
Be strong and very courageous.  Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

1 Chronicles 17
25 You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you.

Psalm 10
17 You hear, O LORD , the desire of the afflicted;
you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed,
in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.

1 Corinthians 16
13Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.
