SPRING BREAK!!!
BYU

Elliot, Wendy, Emily, Wayne, and myself on the BYU campus..

BYU was to be our last major stopping point on the trip, and we were driving in after visiting Colorado National Monument and Arches National Park, earlier that day.  The drive was down a long stretch of desert highway, and we were cruising along when we hit a speed trap.  Who would figure on getting a speeding ticket down an empty highway in the middle of No-where, Utah.

Well, about an hour after that, we arrived in Provo, where BYU is located, to visit Wendy's good friend from high school, Emily.  She is, I believe, a film major, and showed us several commercials she was a part of developing.  They were surprisingly clever and professional, my favorite one being a business man standing in line at a bank when a guy in a chicken costume tackles him out of nowhere.... the punch line being something like, "are you ready for when your investments sideswipe you?".  Heck, I'd think they would be great commercials to be televised even!

Anyways, when we got there we did the normal routine on this trip of crashing at her neighbor's place.  BYU has strict student housing rules about members of the opposite sex staying over too late, or being in bedrooms together.  So we ended up in the attic of these neighbors, which involved climbing this ladder/staircase... I'm not sure which it more resembled.  The next morning in my slumbering stupor, I managed to come crashing down that thing, waking up the whole house.  DOH.

Got some crazy singing going on the second night.

The second night we were there, Emily and her roommates were jamming in the living room with us.  They were actually a touring group, playing around the area, and they were very good.  I don't even know how to describe the style of music, maybe kind of folksy.  One of the girls either on the right or left of Wayne has an amazing voice!  What a wonderful, happy house. =)

Honestly, I feel I am rapidly improving after years of being stuck at the same level.  I guess that's what happens when you thoroughly apply yourself to something!  John is a very advanced skier, and I've had great joy learning the tricks to improve from him.  With luck, you'll see us in the Olympics soon enough.... heh heh heh.

Emily and Wendy prepare to give us a direct hit with the vortex cannon.

The next day, Emily took us on a tour of campus.  The highpoint was visiting the science building, similar to VLSB at Berkeley, even having a dinosaur display.  There was a big room with a bunch of cool devices set up, the best being this "vortex cannon", pictured above.  It was like a big drum that would shoot a directed line of compressed air across the room.  Surprised me when Wendy actually hit me the first time, it felt like I was being shoved!

We stopped at lunch at the BYU student union, which has a significantly better selection than Berkeley.... except in sodas.  Everything was caffeine free!  BLECK.  Don't think I could get used to that.  Walking around inside their student union was like walking down Sproul Plaza in Berkeley, being bombarded with flyers and promotions for various things.  Of course, instead of being asked to protest the war, we were asked to write letters to the troops supporting them.  Different political climate, huh.  The other thing we thought was pretty cool was this sign posted in the student union.  Don't forget: do-nut go there!  I don't know why we thought that was so funny, but it was hilarious when we first saw it.
