SPRING BREAK!!!
Zion

Hanging out on top of the canyon.

Our first stop on our Spring Break road trip would be Zion National Park in Utah.  The plan was to camp there, hit the sites the next day, and continue on towards Colorado.  We got in pretty late and got a campsite.  We managed to pitch the tent, cook dinner, and build a camp fire all without the aid of a light.... not too shabby considering it was so dark outside.  Our big bowl of chili was excellent (thank you Wendy), and subsequent food coma made it easy to fall asleep.  It was a clear, beautiful night, and I opted to sleep out under the stars, while they piled into the tent.  While I could hear the wind outside, I couldn't feel it at all, and I think I probably had a better night sleep than they did.

The next morning was a completely different story.  I woke up to a howling wind, FREEZING cold.  We all got our ski cloths on (didn't really help) and tried to cook pancakes (also didn't help with warmth).  The camp ranger came by and told us that every morning and evening, the wind blew up and down the canyon due to the temperature changes.  Man, whatever, I just wanted to sit in the car the rest of the morning.

After a while the wind calmed down and the sun came out, and we went on a couple of hikes.  The first was along a river bed through the canyon, picture on the left column.  The second was a canyon overlook hike, and that's where we spent most of the rest of the day.  The picture up top is us along that trail.

We hiked up off the trail to enjoy the sites, have lunch, and our quiet time.  There, we were interrupted by a chipmunk who was after our food.  After throwing him a few grapes, he took off.... and returned with friends.  Lesson: don't feed park animals.  So we were in the process of taking the picture on the left when Leon stepped on a cactus.  He spent the next 10 minutes pulling thorns out of his foot and sock, and his ankle started to swell up.  He ended up spending the rest of the day hobbling around.  Maybe the better lesson is just don't stray too far off the trail (don't look too deeply into that lesson).

Crazy cold at 7 in the morning!

The other cool thing was getting to the edge of the canyon where the other picture on the left was taken... man what a view!  The wind blows straight up the canyon wall, so standing on top you don't feel anything.  But we threw some water over the side and the strangest thing happened... it floated in droplets right over the edge.  It was very eerie seeing this water just hover there, and then rise up above us, where it promptly rained back down.  Yeah, well after Zion, we headed up to Bryce Canyon.
