WINTER BREAK SKI TRIP
There's nothing quite like the sense of freedom and peace that skiing provides, as you stand on top of the world. And at the same time, there is an equally balanced rush of adrenaline as that same world flies by. This winter break I had the good fortune of four separate ski trips.... once with IV seniors and super-seniors, once with my family, once with Pilan, Patrick, and Ray, and once with John, Heather, and Celia. While I am still waiting for Pilan's pictures from that third trip, I have posted these pictures from our most recent excursion. . On this last trip, John and I spent the first day tearing up the slopes at Sugarbowl. This was the more intense coverage of the slopes, hitting the hardest runs we could find. I only refused one run, the double black diamond that advertised "do not ski alone, use the buddy system". John promptly skied the run alone. The afternoon we spent trying to get some good action shots. Man, these runs seemed so much steeper when we were on them! Next time I'm bringing a video camera to catch the full madness of our jumps. The two main things I learned here are... 1) Ski crashes are SPECTACULAR! 2) I am a horrible cameraman.... note the trees -=/ |
Honestly, I feel I am rapidly improving after years of being stuck at the same level. I guess that's what happens when you thoroughly apply yourself to something! John is a very advanced skier, and I've had great joy learning the tricks to improve from him. With luck, you'll see us in the Olympics soon enough.... heh heh heh.
The second day of this trip, we added my sister Heather and Celia to our group, and took on Donner Ski Ranch. The terrain here is mostly for beginners, but the price was right: 4 dollars. Its interesting to note that John's chapstick was $4.50. hmmm.... With the limited terrain, our focus quickly shifted to a snowball assault. For a while, Heather and Celia gained the upper hand, but the tides turned with a perfectly timed two prong swoosh assault. Imagine if you will, covering up from the spray of one skier only to look head on into the second. If your imagination is as bad as mine, the top picture on the page may give you some idea what this is like. Once again, the second half of the day was spent working on perfecting our jumping techniques. At this point, Id like to reaffirm the two lessons from the day before.
