3.9 Libraries on Campus

The UC Berkeley Campus has two major library systems: the main library and your departmental library. The main library (the Doe Library) is at the center of the campus. It has two major parts: the main stacks and many library services centers. Next to the main library is the Moffitt Library, the Undergraduate Library. Students at Cal are eligible to visit and check out books in every library on campus, subject to the conditions of that library.

Books are kept at three major places: 1) Main Stacks, 2) Moffitt, and 3) NRLF (you have to make a request by filling out the form at the library service counter and it takes a day to get the book).

You can search books in two ways:
1. Web version (Pathfinder): go to the library website at www.lib.berkeley.edu .Then select pathfinder
2. Telnet version (Gladis): go to telnet.gladis.berkeley.edu, or you may follow the link from the library website.

Telnet version is faster and allows you to renew your book online by typing 'inv', following with your student ID. Then it will ask for the last four digits of your Social Security Number.

You may recall books that somebody has checked out. Go to the library service either in your own department or in the Main Stacks.

The library web site has many more options and databases to explore, on and off campus.

For further options, contact the library service, library website or attend the library tours and classes.

The library also provides a free inter-library service at the Doe Library in case you want to borrow books that UC Berkeley does not have. Check Melvyn search option if you want to do an inventory search for the UC-wide system.

UC Berkeley library stores many Thai books. However, you can only search them by typing a Romanized Thai name. Sometime you need a lot of courage and imagination to do so.

Photocopy service is available at the Doe Library but it is quite expensive; ten cents per page and self-service. To reduce the cost, buy a copy card from any vending machines or from the Doe's Photocopy Service Center. It is approximately 30% cheaper.

The Main Stacks also offers study rooms that you can reserve and use for any tutorial or group study.
