As the Executive Chair, my main responsibilities are to lead and assist officers in achieving their tasks and goals, further officers' spiritual growth, and to promote cohesiveness and communication in the chapter. Being a Tzu Ching is not only a volunteer experience, but a personal experience as well. As a part of the TC core team, we all work together to help others and improve ourselves along the way. In the core, I am happy to see that officers establish personal friendships that goes beyond the realm of the chapter. By establishing such a close bond, officers are able to work together in a fun and cohesive manner.
As an Activity Chair, my main responsibility is to plan out an activity calendar for the semester. Along with this responsibility is to coordinate with various organizations, TC adult groups, and TC volunteers. For each event Activity Chairs (Eugene and I) have to come up with a organized agenda and also to distribute tasks evenly among members and core members.
As the officer promoting the "culture" part of the Tzu Chi's Eight Foot Prints, my job is to hold a bi-weekly culture discussion about aspects of Buddhism. For this semester, I'm thinking of bringing in more introductory material so that I can introduce Buddhism to the members, for I am one who is eager to learn as well! Another part of my job as culture chair is to hold brief reflection discussions during events so that members can have a chance to talk about their feelings about a specific event when the memory about that event is still new.
The public relations chair is a medium-stress level position in Berkeley Tzu Chi that can occasionally become overwhelming, especially in the beginning of the semester. This was the first time I've taken the position, and I've learned a lot from my mistakes. However, with some careful planning it need not be a chore. General duties include the following: arranging the Sproul tabling schedule for the first couple weeks of the semester, managing flyers, pamphlets etc., maintaining and managing Tzu Chi's OCF (Open Computing Facility) Account, answering e-mails and questions students may have about our organization, spending out announcements and e-mails about events, and promoting our club to the public in general. It definitely helps to have been in Tzu Chi for a while before becoming public relations chair, since people will expect you to know everything about the club and will want answers from you. However, you feel satisfied afterwards that you have answered someone's question. Planning the tabling schedule was surprisingly time consuming, and I advise future officers to come prepared beforehand, and not to underestimate the job!
As a School Relation Chair, I am mainly responsible for reserving the room for meetings and activities as needed. I am also responsible for signing up for Calpolooza, Cal Day, funding from ASUC and for a cage to put the club's tabling equipments. Last but not least, I am coordinating a special project which will take place during the middle of this semester.
This is my brief duty description for documentation:
The webmaster has the responsibility of updating the webpage in a timely manner. Photos are passed to the webmaster to be posted in the website gallery. The webmaster needs to know/learn: XHTML,CSS,Photoeditor programs, and other web-languages that are required for the job.
As an activity intern, my job is mainly helping out the two activity chairs on activity-related matters. For instance, giving out suggestion during the core meetings and activity planning for the semester, accomplishing small tasks, such as making name tags, etc. As an intern, I am also learning during the process of activity planning, decision making and experiencing the marvelous TC team work. Since the two highly capable activity chairs are doing a great job in their position, there isn't much for me to do. In this case, I can also help out the other chairs! That's why I called TC a "team." I am glad to be part of TC and I am looking forward to see all of you becoming one of us, the Tzu Chi big family.
As a School Relation Intern, my main job is to assist the school relation chair to take care of administrative business. These include reserving rooms for activities, and signing up for school funding, Cal Day, and Calpolooza. Another essential part of my job is to participate in TC core meetings. TC officers work as a team, thus, I would offer to help whenever its needed. In the process of participating in TC core meeting, activities and working with the officers, I'm developing my leadership, communication and activity planning skills. Its a valuable experience.
