Welcome to UC Jazz
UC Jazz Ensembles is dedicated to the performance, study and promotion of jazz at UC Berkeley. Currently, UC Jazz consists of seven combos, ranging in size from 3 to 8 musicians, and one big band. The combos are divided into Intermediate and Advanced categories. Auditions for everyone are held at the beginning of every fall semester, and spring auditions can be arranged by contacting UC Jazz Director Ted Moore. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board in UC Jazz during the first week of classes along with the audition schedule. UC Jazz provides rehearsal space, also available for individual use by UCJ students, for music and non-music majors, as well as for undergrad and graduate students. Community members are occasionally invited to participate as needed.
The combos cover a wide range of repertoire and styles and much emphasis is placed on how to perform in an ensemble. Ensembles meet weekly, and along with our annual Fall and Spring concerts, UC Jazz students perform in over 40 events per year on and off campus. Student arrangements and compositions are always encouraged. We are located in the basement of the Cesar Chavez building at the end of the hall. Contact Ted Moore for more information.

Faculty Activities
Frank Martin
UC Jazz piano instructor, Frank Martin, went to New York in April to perform as arranger and pianist for Sting in his annual Benefit for the Rainforest Concert. In addition to Sting, this year's guests artists included James Taylor, Elton John, and Meryl Streep.
Ted Moore
On Sunday, June 5, Ted Moore will be a guest artist in a Brazilian All-Star band to perform in the Healdsburg Jazz Festival. This group will include many great names in the Brazilian jazz world, like guitarist Romero Lubambo and vocalist Pamela Driggs, both from New York and from the Bay Area.

On Sunday, April 17, UC Jazz Director Ted Moore performed in concert with saxophonist Paul Winter and the great Brazilian guitarist, Oscar Castro-Neves, one of the original founders of the bossa nova movement in Brazil.
Glenn Richman; Ted Moore
Bass instructor, Glenn Richman will play at Yoshi's in Oakland with jazz great, vibist Bobby Hutcherson, on Jan 27 and 28.
On Saturday, February 5, UC Jazz will host a clinic by saxophonist Mike Zilber; everyone is welcome to attend.
On February 16-18, Ted Moore and UC Jazz will host a visiting group of drummers from Tokyo for 3 days of workshops with an array of great Bay Area drummers, including Jaz Sawyer, Akira Tana, and Billy Johnson.
