Eager to start the season off, the Cal women’s rugby team, flush with rookies, descended upon the Stanford field on October 30th for the Stanford 10s Tournament. As the first time the vets and rookies played together, it would prove to be a tough, yet educational day, focused on improvement.
The Gold and Blue sides were each matched up against some strong competition. The Gold team had a hard day all around, scoring no tries in any of their matches. They did have some very close calls, with a notable run and near try by rookie, Megan McGinnis in their penultimate game against Humboldt white. Despite the game results, the Gold side pushed hard and didn’t retreat.
The Blue side faired better, starting out with a win over tournament runners up, BYU white. That match finished with a score of 21-15. This was a promising start for the Blue side, and they continued throughout the day in much the same way. They beat their final opponents, the club team, the Barbarians, with a score of 12-0. The Blues also took s win after a forfeit from Humboldt. Although the blue side lost to Chico and the EPA Razorbacks, they put up a good fight, and came away with 5 points in the latter game.
This is only the beginning for the cal bears, and with this preparation and continued training, we stand to see exciting improvements throughout the year.

This past weekend the Bears headed off to a 7’s tournament at Stanford. The team had never played 7’s before, but the gold side went 2 and 1 in the tournament. The tournament was a great oportunity for the team to knock some rust off and get in some solid playing time in preparation for Stanford 10’s, coming in late October.
Carla Banks, who brought home multiple tries with her blistering pace, and Aubrey Huey, who also brought in a try and demonstrated fierce defense, were named the MVP’s for the bears.

The Bears recently headed off to Davis for PCRFU Playoffs. First they faced the home team, UC Davis, both sides hoping for a victory that would ensure their place at nationals. The rain pelted down throughout the game and at the half the score line was Cal 5 Davis 0 thanks to a try scored by junior lock Maddy McComb. In the second half Davis struck early scoring a try, but Cal answered back as senior flanker Kathy Sprowles brought a try in for the Bears. Davis then scored two tries, converting one of them. Near the end of the game senior center Lucy Croy brought a try in for Cal, but the game ultimately ended in a 15-17 defeat for the Bears.
Cal then faced BYU and used many of the skills they had developed over the two weeks since their last game against BYU to hold the score line at 15-5. Cal showed a great deal of skill and growth during playoffs, but nationals where not to be.
This season the Bears demonstrated passion and heart both in practice and on the field. Though the graduating seniors will be missed, the Bears are excited for the next season.

The Bears blew out the Ducks 54-5 on Friday March 19th to keep their season alive and earn a spot in the PCRFU play-offs. Both forwards and backs contributed to the scoring effort, and the Bears played well the few times they were on defense. Please read the rugby magazine article for more complete coverage.
Following Friday’s victory, the Bears played against Cougar Rugby (BYU) to determine play-off seedings. Cal struggled with depth issues after losing a few players to minor injuries in the Oregon game, and wasn’t able to overcome BYU’s relentless offense.
Cal will take on UC Davis next Friday, April 2nd in Davis in their first game at PCRFU play-offs. The Bears need to win one game on either Friday or Saturday to advance to Nationals.

For the first time since 2008, the Cal Women’s Rugby team was able to play a league match on Cal’s Witter Rugby field. Despite great support from friends, family, and alumni, Cal narrowly lost a tough match to rival UC Davis, 27-17. Penalties and turn-overs again hampered the Bears, who otherwise played an excellent game that was a vast improvement over the previous week’s game against Stanford.
After the game, friends, family, and alumni joined the team at the annual Homecoming banquet, where attendees ate, drank, and merrily enjoyed each other’s company. The team would like to thank everyone who came to the game and the event for their wonderful support!

The Cal Women’s rugby team played a strong second half but couldn’t overcome a slow start in a 13-43 loss to Stanford on Sunday February 28th. Throughout the first half, the Bears struggled against Stanford’s fast backs and quick turnovers, and stymied themselves with penalties and sloppy play from both forwards and backs. Stanford capitalized on Cal’s mistakes to jump to an early 36-5 lead at the half. The Bears came out with a more intense and organized defense in the second half and managed to hold Stanford to one try, but were unable to mount a comeback despite outscoring Stanford 8-7 in the half. Flanker Zully Camacho scored a try in the first half after flanker Kathy Sprowles blocked a kick, prop and captain Julia Diskin punched in a try in the second half, and eight man Jen Sever converted a penalty kick to round out Cal’s points.

The Cal Women’s Rugby team improved to 2-0 in league after a strong 26-19 victory over Reno. The Bears continued their balanced attacking game, with tries coming from both forwards and backs. Winger Cameo Motley continued to be a strong threat on the outside, blazing down the field for two tries, while hooker Ana Robles and wing Nha Vu each added a try as well. Jen Sever converted on 3 of 4 attempts to round out the Bears’ points. Read a full recap from Rugby Mag here.

Cal Women’s rugby Player, Kathy Sprowles, was named the Cal Recreational Sports Department’s Clif Bar Athlete of the week for Feb 4. Her citation reads:
“Kathy is a fierce fourth year veteran of the Cal Women’s Rugby team. Her job as a flanker is a physically demanding job: not only does she have to be the fittest person on the field, she also makes the most tackles and helps the team move forward — a flanker’s job is never done! So far, the women ruggers are 1-0 in their league season, after smashing Sacramento State 34-12 last weekend. Kathy played a huge part in that win with her aggressive runs and massive tackles. Go Kathy!”
