There is a meeting between a new manager of a bank and one of her subordinates, with whom she used to date in their younger days. She likes boys under her to be happy as she said, so she got a nice bottle of excellent cognac she remembered Jack likes. Jack poured in glasses good measure of cognac making a toast regarding her promotion, the beginning of their professional relationship and, of course, looking forward to seeing each other again. They have not even taken a sip when another subordinate, Phil, with a certain look of urgency about him enters, so she asks Jack to excuse them for a minute. Being a gentleman Jack steps out of her office into the hallway, and then drinks the cognac in a gulp, even though he likes to sip it as cognac slowly slips down the throat as nectar - this is his phrase not unfamiliar to his friends and colleagues. He did not drink in that fashion so as to ease his nervousness, but why?

Jack is jealous, and something of a sneak.

I'm not sure I understand Icarus's answer (like most of them it seems ) but perhaps Jack is under the legal drinking age and wants to get it down him before Phil tells the manager?

Have you seen the new King Kong movie? The director in that movie does almost the exact same thing, for the same reason. If that doesn't give it away, then consider that maybe Jack drinks not for thirst, but because he needs something fast, and drinking is the quickest way to get it without giving himself away. Now what will Jack have after drinking that he did not have before (other than a buzz)?

| Yes, that is where my riddle originates. First I saw it in that movie, and then I invented it.

Ah, I haven't seen King Kong So what, is he trying for a bit of Dutch courage? I didn't think that would get around the "not drinking for nervousness" bit. -Edit- Haha okay I just looked up a plot spoiler for King Kong...very clever

You ought to see it. The plot, acting and directing are only so-so, but the dinosaur scenes alone are well worth the price.
