Friends, Riddlers, Countrymen, be sure to hear,
this basic unit is less than an ear
~~OO~~
You are far too specific, too narrow, you see...
More all-encompassing, like me, you must be.
~~OO~~
A hero, a patriot, a true friend to choose...
If you still need a hint, I'll give you the 'clues.'

Well, two looks suspiciously like whole/hole to me... Other than that, I'm kinda stuck - Other than possibly one referring in some way to measures of sound (decibels or similar) which start below the audible range - not sure where Julius Caesar sneaks in with this though  Undecided

As for three - surely not some kind of self-referential riddle  Roll Eyes

For one: ::A grain is an archaic measure of weight and also a part of an ear (of corn)::

No idea about 3 though

Let's see if I understand these things.
First would be kernel, homonym for colonel
Second then has to be general
Third could possibly refer to a "private" eye looking for clues? just a wild guess
Then a connection to the title might be Off we go sounds like the races, so maybe it's Man O'War

Along the lines of Asterix's answers, possibly captain for part 3 - at least that's the rank which screams out at me when thinking of "heroes" and "patriots" - maybe just too many films, or something... Roll Eyes

Not sure what the overall answer would be, though...

3 is still not right.

Think I'll go watch a kid's show about a dog.

Hmm... shows about a dog...

Lassie perhaps?

:: Having done a google search, this riddle seems to have something to do with the US Air Force - ranks have so far been given in the clues (1 & 2 at least), and the title (Off we go) is the first three words of the Air Force song. This would leave the last one as being one of the following: Major, Captain (already discarded as wrong), Lieutenant, Sergeant, Airman, (and possibly Brigadier) - Don't know how any of these relate to a children's show about a dog, though  Roll Eyes

Maybe #3 is::"blues" from Blues Clues::

In that case, maybe it has to do with the US civil war?

[e] Having just read Three Hands's reply, and not being from the US myself, I'd like to ask: is the US airforce uniform blue?[/e]

Another quick google later, and yes, the Air Force uniform is blue. Sounds like you've got the answer to 3 though BNC - never heard of that show, but google apparantly has...

Blue's Clues is a very popular children's show here in the US feature a dog, "Blue", who leaves clues for the clueless host.

In short, "Yes."

The theme of :: Air Force :: is correct.
