The stuff that parents try to put into their children's brains. Take away the whole of me, yet some still remains. What am I?

Blecch. The answer is an adjective, so it isn't "stuff". Maybe if you said "the kind of stuff"...

Wholesome is an adjective, as you said. Therefore what you are saying, that "wholesome isn't stuff" holds true. However, the question is not "What is stuff?" but "What am I?" or "What is wholesome?" Are you a native English speaker by the way? I don't see why you won't accept this construction.

yeah, but when you say "the stuff", you're using stuff as a generic noun, such as "thing". so you may as well be saying "the noun that parent's..." You can't put a wholesome anywhere. Hmmm, I guess if you intended for us to pick from a list of "stuff". Like, if we had a list that included: bad stuff good stuff yucky stuff wholesome stuff stupid stuff Perhaps then we would know we were to pick from the list when you said "the stuff". But, normally I would consider the riddle asking for a noun. Unless parents are putting the word "wholesome" in there...

I see the point both of you are making. If it is possible, I try write a riddle with as much grammatical accuracy as possible. That said, can you suggest a small phrase that could be added here to create the desired scenario?
