By drawing two squares and two lines, how many triangles can you make?

6???

I get [hide]12[/hide] by [hide]ineterleaving the squares and drawing the lines such that each one cuts two already constructed triangles in half.[/hide]

I get [hide]15[/hide]

I can get at least 1 more than gotit.

...and I assume towr also has 5 *obvious* pentagons in the middle? I just counted, but hesitant to post my score.

I only see 4 obvious pentagons.. So maybe it's a different formation; 5's a bit odd anyway.

[hide]18[/hide]  The tricky part is actually to count the triangles.

You're right, I actually had [hide]20[/hide]

Um... Yes. Counting IS hard. I had 4 pentagons :-[  and 24 triangles. I didn't find counting the triangles hard...
[hide] 4*3 (the bisected corners), 4 (the unbisected corners), 4 (the quarter squares), 4 (the half squares) [/hide].

OK, I recounted, I get [hide]24[/hide] too.

Yeah, me too.
I can't believe how hard counting triangles is... :-[

I should not have tried doing this in my head.... :-[

I too was comfortable with 20 (hence  'post my score'). It was only after I posted that I noticed the 4 largest triangles...

Who put this in easy anyway?  :P

I have a trick to count triangles:
I take any outer corner of the figure, count how many triange there are touching that corner.
Then I erase it (i.e. put a finger on it) and restart with another corner until no more triangle is possible.

That makes it easy.

But I still miscounted. :-/

I get [hideb]14[/hideb], and who put this in easy anyway?

There may have many triangles. It depends on how you arrange the square and draw the line.

I can't find the way to get more than 11 triangles :(.

See attachment,
8 red,
8 green, (4 of which consist of two reds)
4 blue,
4 orange (consisting of two blues, which are shared)

[hide]22[/hide] but it depends on your placement.

Very sticky question...I think it's 20  :)

I see 6 orange.

Then you're probably misinterpreting the figure. Each orange-type triangle consists of 3 vertices of the main square; as it only has 4 vertices, there can only be 4 such triangles.

Yeah there are more than 4 triangles in the orange figure but that not what it means. There are 4 of the orange "size" triangles in the whole figure. Alot of these types of puzzles  were on the asvab when I tested years back. Fun stuff.

could you please post a snap shot as you are telling about two squares and two lines I don't know where you are telling to draw the two lines so, please post a snapshot which will be very helpful for me.

That's the whole point. You have to decide where to draw the squares and lines yourself so you can maximize the number of triangles.
