And receiving even more spam than I am doing allready?

yes  ;)

Actually, they are reputed to have a very good spam-filter. Also, how much spam you get depends in no small part on how many websites you paste your email adress on. Keep it private and spammers can't find and abuse it.

Can't see why anybody would need more than the 100Mb that Yahoo! gives.

I have an interesting theory as to how spammers get email addresses...

Some time ago I set up a number of hotmail accounts and ensured that they were in no public directories, nor were they used to register for anything. However, over time I noticed that junk mail came to a number of the accounts. It seems that spammers send mails to random mail addresses containing real words with numbers/letters as affixes. Every single one of my test accounts that contained a real word received junk mail, the other accounts never received any junk mails at all. To strengthen the test I even used words in other languages. For example, alitheia_1 (Greek for truth) received junk mail, whereas mafs_rox never received any junk.

My theory is that the types of mails we receive in these instances (sent to random accounts), advertise a non-existent product, but with a "Click here to be unsubscribed" link. Once you click that link, the potential account is flagged as active and added to a list that can then be sold on. If the link is never clicked they would never know if the mails were arriving at a real account or not.

Some e-mail accounts give a notification if an adress doesnt exist. So if there's no answer back, they still know the adress is active. Then they send u a tidlewave of mails hoping that the receiver is at least opening one, even by accident.

Many of them contain pop-up-programs (not send as an attachment but as a link). Open one accidentally and you're doomed for a polluted PC.

I speak from experience. I opened a e-mail from someone i thought was a friend of mine. However it was someone else.

Gmail also has nice sort options (e.g., according to "conversations" -- similar to threads). Plus, you get google search power for your emails (and you may need it with 1GB). The main problem (imho) is that they say they may keep records of all email even after deletion.

I get my email through my web host, 1 GB total for all their services. I have seen one of my mailboxes that I rarely check get over 100 MB. I assumed most of it was spam and deleted it from the command line. It was not worth downloading and looking through.

Recently I had a procmail log over 10 MB. And that was just the subject lines of stuff that was being sent to /dev/null instead of my mailbox. If I kept all those emails I would have been sitting at over 500 MB because of all the attachments.

I can easily see how one might need a GB mailbox. I have one although it comes out of my overall disk quota and sometimes my usage spikes if there is a spam attack (e.g. >5,000 per day) and I do not check my mail for more than 12-24 hours.

Yes, of course, just let me consult my fairy friends to find out your e-mail address and I'll send you one. What's that? The post saying they're all gone? Never mind that. And just ignore the fact that the name at the top of this post isn't the same as the one on the first post...

In fact, you probably won't even bother to read this (you don't seem to have read the rest of the thread) so I don't know why I'm bothering...

Well I guess I just learned what that letter icon is for :-)

Title: Re: Want a gmail invite?

I already knew what that letter icon was for - I just didn't bother checking whether it was there since I assumed that non-members didn't have e-mail addresses... My defense is that it's been so long since I was a non-member that I've forgotten much of what I knew...

Just goes to show - a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing  :-[

I'm gonna close this thread, cause obviously most people replying seem unable to read. And the last post gives an alternative place to beg for gmail invites..
