Title: Where am I? - in Great Britain
Post by jollytall on Sep 5th, 2006, 9:21am
Based on the example shown for Japan (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=what_am_i;action=display;num=1155211379), let's start our journey around the earth (I hope faster than 80 days). The first appointment is in Great Britain. And the four postcards:

First postcard:
X2 + Y2 = 1

Second postcard:
4X2 ± 20X + 21 = -4Y2
16X2 ± 40X +13 = -16Y2 - 16Y

Third postcard:
I met Sunny Louis.

Fourth postcard:
We swear...

So let's meet.

P.S. The sign "±" is actually +/- but it does not appear well, at least in my browser.

Graphing the equations from the first two cards gives [hide]the Olympic rings[/hide]. Don't yet have a clue about the other cards...

[hide]I'll guess London, since the Olympic games have been held there in the past (and will be in '12).[/hide]

Sunny Louis is who again?

If he's some kind of [hide]blue singer, I may say "St. Louis, mississippi, where olympic games were held exactly 100 years since the last games.[/hide]

I have a feeling Sunny Louis is[hide]Louis XIV, aka "the Sun King"[/hide]
But the only connection I've come up with between him and London is that [hide] XIV was the 1948 Olympiad in London.[/hide]
Now if "we swear... "could have anything to do with [hide] Wembley Stadium [/hide], I'd say we're there.

I think that nails it. "Swear" is apparently some sort of [hide]clothing store[/hide] or something.

Are we meeting in a [hide]clothing store changing room?[/hide]

Astrix is good in this (see also Japan)...

For the completeness...

London actually had two (plus one future) [hide]Olympic games[/hide]. The [hide]XIVth[/hide] was the last one where the [hide]oath[/hide] started with the words [hide]"We swear..." [/hide]Since then it has changed. And indeed the [hide]oath[/hide] was - as part of the [hide]opening ceremony [/hide]- in the [hide]Wembley[/hide].

But don't get relaxed. The show moves on. See you in Hungary...

Isn't this what you'd call 'european-centric' I guess?

London is more like 'europe-excentric'.

What do you mean cchris? If we want to go around the world we have to touch every continent, and it so happened that Phileas Fogg started his journey in England and went to east, just as we do. But don't worry we get to all other continents.

btw the first (sort of trial) city was in Japan.

Well it was more of a joke, someone made a comment about the Mojave desert being 'ameri-centric', which I disagreed with just because it took place in North America. But I suppose that meant people in other countries would have a hard time finding it out. I don't know much about Europe but I kind of smacked myself in the head after seeing the answer to this one.

I couldn't solve this one. I still don't know what the Wembley is.

It is more like the Wembley Stadium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wembley_Stadium). Also a good way to find is through the games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_Summer_Olympics).
And a bit more on the oath (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Oath) that was taken in 1948 starting with "We swear". Later it became "We promise". According to some sources the last time it started with "We swear" was actually in 1948.

It was linked to Wembley stadium, until I realized there was a place called Wembley.
