Title: Where am I? - in Hungary
Post by jollytall on Sep 5th, 2006, 11:35pm
Following the Japan (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=what_am_i;action=display;num=1155211379)and Great Britain (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=what_am_i;action=display;num=1157473314)appointments, here comes the next one.

First postcard:
I am in a young city, established only in 1873.

Second postcard:
It seems to me, I met Axel Foley today.

Third postcard:
I walked from one club to 7NT.

Fourth postcard:
Mr Wells would have loved our story.

Well, you're obviously in [hide]Budapest[/hide], and from card 3 I'd say [hide]on one of the brigdes over the Danube[/hide], but I haven't worked out cards 2 or 4 yet...

Well done, Tom.

Get ready for the next city (though I have to solve how to upload a picture, first).

Go to tinypic.com, they have free hosting. Browse for the image, then click "upload", then copy the image link (third one down I think, ending in .jpg) and use that for the image link here. It's free quick hosting.

Postcard 1: Young city in Hungary at 1873 = Budapest.

Postcard 2: "Seems like Axel Foley." That was one of the descriptions of Eddie Murphey in the I-Spy Movie which had scenes in Hungary on the Széchenyi Chain Bridge.

Postcard 3: 7NT is a term from the card game "Bridge."

Postcard 4: Mr. Wells was a big science fiction guy and the Chain Bridge is pretty advanced technology... I guess.

I think the fourth postcard was a reference to War of the Worlds, ergo WWII when the bridge was bombed and then rebuilt.

Yea that too. But I thought there were already too many bridge references. I got it from the 2nd postcard. I watch too many movies.

Just to clarify few missing bits:

P1: Budapest indeed. The trick was, that Bp is a very old town, first ruins are from the Roman time, but officially Budapest was formed in 1873 from three separate towns, Pest, Buda and Old Buda.
P2: Yes, reference to Eddie Murphey, and his link to Budapest is "I Spy".
P3: Not only 7NT is a reference to bridge, but also 1C. From 1C to 7NT is the range you can say in the game.
P4: Indeed, H.G. Wells was the person. He wrote (among others, e.g. The War of the Worlds) "The  Invisible Man". The film had two bridges (Chain and Liberty, both destroyed, actually blown up, not bombed  in WWII), but the main item the Spy was after was an invisible plane, stored on the top of the Chain bridge. This was to decide between the two bridges.

Then the film had nothing to do with Wells (I just finished re-reading "the invisible man").

BNC, Indeed Wells had nothing to do with the film (or vice versa). The link was the fact that someone or something can be invisible. That's why Wells would have liked the situation shown in the film.

Sameer, You do not need to remember a film like that. Actually, if you ask me, you don't even need to watch a film like that. Or not even make it :-) But this is why we have search engines...
