Yes, this has been observed when the speaker is standing first time in front of the crowd.

No matter he may be an expert in his subject, but if it is first time he has faced the crowd then he is bound to stammer. :)

I have heard that this is the biggest fear in our society. Even bigger than a fear of death.

I think that it is related with our childhood and a fear to be not accepted by others.

Putting a name on it doesn't explain it.

At most, it is an indication that the phenomenon is common enough that people figured out a name for it.

I think it is simply the fact that people are put in a situation where they have never been before, and don't know how to behave. Since people are taught to behave well especially when they are watched, with many people it becomes a huge pressure. So the high pressure to behave right and the uncertainty of how to behave creates this fear.

It's probably also a fear of the impact on their reputation: "what will people think of me".

In my opinion it is highly related to experiences in a childhood. Our education system should work on this problem.
