iheres a prob.

3 men check into a motel and each pay $10 for their accomodation, making a total of $30.  after collecting the money, the owner realises she had  discount on that day and so gives the bellboy $5 and tells him to give them back the discount and keep $2 for himself as a tip.  In the end each man paid $9 for his accomodation.  so if they paid $27 for their accomodation and the bell boy took $2, where did the extra dollar go.

This (above) is how the riddle was told to me.
Ya see what we're thinking is that the tip is not actually included in the $30, there was a refund of $3 and the owner provided the tip of $2, creating a total funds pool of $32.

Or that there was a refund of $5 (being $25 for accomodation) and the 3 people only received back $1 each the owner taking the (incorrect) authority to dive into the funds and allocate the tip without the consent of the three residents, who's money it was.

There is already a thread on this subject in the hard section, titled "Vanishing Dollar". I think you can find answers there.
