WRITE MEANINGFUL TITLES! AND DON'T SAY "NEW"!
« on: Nov 4th, 2002, 7:50pm »

Please use meaningful titles when starting a new thread. This will make thread browsing easier.

Example Riddle:
"Who makes it, has no need of it.
Who buys it, has no use for it.
Who uses it can neither see nor feel it."

Example Bad Subject Titles:
"help me"
"here's a goodone"
"explanation plz"

Example Better Subject Title:
"What Am I: Who Makes It Has No Need Of It"

Also, I would prefer that people do not prepend subject titles with the word "NEW", because then I'll have to manually delete that word after a sufficient amount of time has passed. As of now, we have threads from months back that still claim to be NEW. Furthermore, YaBB automatically puts a "New" symbol next to new threads.

Yeah, I was going to ask about that. As I posted a problem in the Putnams last night, I also got the feeling that it is silly to call something from a month ago "new". So I started looking for a way to modify the thread's name, much like you're allowed to modify the text in your posts (I had started the thread). I couldn't find a way, though. Is there one? Sorry, I only thought about that AFTER I posted the last one.

Pietro - I was able to remove the "NEW" from the front of my "All sigs. are false" thread. Just modify your original post and change the subject line. I'll go ahead and clean up my others as well.

  Thanks, Icarus! Smiley

I also removed the "NEW" prefixes from most of my posted problems - however, there are some that remain unsolved, and are relatively recent - I left the prefix as it was in those cases. I myself feel more motivated to try out a problem if it hasn't been solved yet, all other thing being equal (interestingness, beauty, etc). I really love to see a "0" on the number of replies of a good problem. Smiley

So I thought I'd make the unsolved ones stick out, at least for another week.

Time was responding to the riddle I listed:

Example Riddle:
"Who makes it, has no need of it.
Who buys it, has no use for it.
Who uses it can neither see nor feel it."

I guess I've been interpreting "new" in titles a little differently.  I've been taking it to mean "This thread is not about an existing riddle; this thread is presenting a riddle not previously on the site.".  Even months later, it will still remain true that that is the particular thread in which a riddle was proposed, which can be interesting information.

Is there some other standard way to indicate this in thread titles?

Since duplicate threads are generally highlighted as such pretty rapidly, and often shut down/deleted, any thread that has existed more than a short time should contain a novel problem, making a label to that effect redundant.

If you wander over to the "what am I" forum, and look  through a few pages to find something with the right sort of title, you'll find discussion of this riddle.

Or you could try using the forum Search feature (extending the maximum age to something large) which throws up at least one thread from that forum if you put "coffin" in.
