Law issues...

Ok, so this is the story: A man is arrested one fine friday morning. He is soon being briefed - suposedly, he killed a politician (not very nice charges, wouldn't like to take his place!)... So, the trial begins and our dear man claims not guilty. The problem is, the d.a. has no real case - the only evidence is a testimony given by a politician's friend... he claims to have witnessed the murder. So, now we have a problem - man to man, two different versions, no alibi... But, we all know our man is inocent. But the judge is not as nearly as convinced. So, as to be fair - he comes up with a solution. (keep in mind that this is not present tense and issues were resolved differently in the past). The judge will give the man two pieces of paper. One says "guilty" and the other "not guilty". Depending on which the man will chose, that will be his sentence. So, he stands equal chance to both end up free, or hanged. So far, our man stands a chance. The only problem is - the judge is a bad guy. What he did is the following: he took two pieces of paper and wrote "guilty" on both of them. So either way, the man will be hanged. But... the man is freed of charges - how is that possible? How did he manage to save himself?

This puzzle is already on the site somewhere. The defendant chose one piece of paper and ate it!

don't fret lalamel. It's a good riddle, it's only recently been added to this compendium. The format before this was *slightly* better, IMHO- seems to work better. It was black and white pebbles off the beach. Nice work and quick thinking meant the girl didn't have to marry some nasty git or other.

I think that nasty git was an evil Major or something.. (Or that's yet another incarnation of the same puzzle. I'm pretty sure there are already multiple on the forum)
