Well, assuming  is standard multiplication and X is a free real variable, clearly the maximum i is 26, but I'm guessing that's not the intended interpretation of this riddle as it's just a bit too straightforward.

Maybe that's the problem. You guys were evaluating the maximum rather than the maxinum i.e. a hybrid of maximum and minimum.
Maybe that's why the answer is i=1/2n
