Double Riddle:

1)
You have a 3 gallon bottle filled with water and a 5 gallon bottle filled with water. You need exactly 4 gallons in the bucket. How do you accomplish this?

2)
What movie is this from?

There's a lot of ways to do it. One way to do it: pour the water from the 3 gallons bottle into the bucket, then fill that bottle from the 5 gallon bottle, throwing out the 2 gallons left. Then fill the 5 gallon bottle again from the 3 gallon bottle and top it off from the bucket. Fill up the 3 gallon bottle from the 5 gallon bottle again, and then add those 3 gallons to the bucket, which then contains 4 gallons.

I don't know what movie it is from.... but it does sound familiar

I think you:
empty the five gallons into the bucket
empty the 3 gallons in the 5g bottle
collect 3 g from the bucket leaving   2gallons in the bucket!
empty the 2g into the 5 g bottle which would be full
pour out the last 1g
empty 5g bottle into the 3g bottle  and put the left over 2g into the bucket

This leaves 4gallons in the bucket!
3gallons in the 3gallon bottle
0gallons in the 5gallon bottle
and unfortunately 1 gallon wasted in the bin!

In the movie this was done in a fountain with basically unlimited water supply. This bomb was to  deactivated by placing the bottle on a hotwired scale. They had to do it with no extra bucket.

You simply pour 3 gallons into empty 5 gallon container, refill 3 gallon and pour into the 5 up to brim thus leaving 1 gallon in the three gallon container. Done and doner.

The movie is Die hHard With A Vengeance.  Grin

Just mixing both 3 and 5 gallons in the 8 gallons bottle and pour the half from it.

What 8 gallon bottle? And how would you know you'd poured half out?

Bottles, jugs, buckets  ...

If we begin with a full 5-gallon bottle and a full 3-gallon bottle and an empty bucket (capable of holding at least 8 gallons of water) then
(1) empty the 3-gallon bottle into bucket
(2) fill 3-gallon bottle from the 5-gallon bottle (now the 5-gallon bottle contains 2 gallons of water)
(3) empty the 3-gallon bottle into bucket and pour the two gallons remaining in 5-gallon bottle into 3-gallon bottle.
(4) Fill the 5-gallon bottle from the bucket.
(5) The 3-gallon bottle now has two gallons of water
 (6) Pour water from the 5-gallon bottle into the 3-gallon bottle until full.
 (7) Now 5- gallon bottle is left  with 4 gallons of water.

You do realize that five gallons of waters weigh about 41.5 pounds ... tough job pouring water from one bottle into the other without spilling a few drops ... have you ever had to replace the office water cooler bottle?

As I have explained somewhere else, there is a generic algorith for 2 containers, A and B and a reserve/supply of water:

1. if A is emtpy, fill A
2. if B is full, empty B
3. else transfer from A to B

This gives 2 solutions depending on which of A and B is the largest.

If A is 5 and B is 3
[rule] A / B / reserve:
[0] 5 / 3 / 0
[2] 5 / 0 / 3
[3] 2 / 3 / 3
[2] 2 / 0 / 6
[3] 0 / 2 / 6
[1] 5 / 2 / 1
[3] 4 / 3 / 1
[2] 4 / 0 / 4

If A is 3 and B is 5
[0] 3 / 5 / 0
[2] 3 / 0 / 5
[3] 0 / 3 / 5
[1] 3 / 3 / 2
[3] 1 / 5 / 2
[2] 1 / 0 / 7
[3] 0 / 1 / 7
[1] 3 / 1 / 4
[3] 0 / 4 / 4
