The riddle takes place in North Africa, 1600, with the English mercenary Solomon Kane leading the crew of his ship into battle against the Ottoman occupiers of a fortress town. After defeating the Ottoman defenders, Solomon and nine of his men enter the fortress, only to enter the corridor of enchanted mirrors. It won’t be easy to reach the throne room, because demons trapped within the mirrors will try to snatch and kill them.

The corridor is long and narrow. There are ten mirrors on the left wall, each having one demon, which can snatch one person per day. The mercenaries and the mirrors in front of them, are all 1 m distant from one another. Kane is, uncharacteristically, the last one in the line, regardless of the eventual objections by his mates, because he knows that his survival is of uttermost importance. They’re currently standing still, as the one at the head of the line is foreboding evil and imminent danger. He’s 1 m away from the first mirror, thinking about his next move. He decides to yell: “Let’s run for it lads!”

They’re all running at the same speed. The mercenaries, who might get snatched when in front of a mirror, travel 1 m each second. So the mercenary who’s initially 1st in the line will arrive at another mirror each consecutive second, until he gets snatched. Every 3rd consecutive sec, starting from the moment they begin to run, maximum two persons can be snatched. If there are more potential victims than two at a time, those who are closer to the throne room will be chosen by the demons. Once aware of their presence, demons can prey all day and only those who are moving towards the throne room.

How many will fight their way into the throne room and help themselves to the fortress's treasure? Is Solomon Kane one of them?
