I need to cut out 200 circles out of regular 8 1/2 by 11 paper. If each radius must be 1 inch long, what is the fewest amount of sheets needed? Assume I can use tape.

If you can use tape, does it mean you can make circles from an arbitrary number of pieces? I would cut the paper in narrow stripes and stick them together into circles. That's probably not what you meant.

That is exactly what I meant. My students tend to focus on circles as disc and not consider them as ribbons. So of course it can be fine with 1 sheet.

so it boils down to an area calculation problem? In that case the answer is: 7 sheets. But you'll probably need a lot of tape and patience PS: What is the smallest number of sheets needed if you have no tape?

I think it can be done with 20 sheets.
