Title: Missing Link
Post by THUDandBLUNDER on Aug 18th, 2006, 11:13am
Find a word that follows the first word in the clue and precedes the second, in each case making a new word or phrase:

1) split (          ) game
2) yellow (          ) stand
3) dinner (         ) politics
4) fencing (          ) tissue
5) reproduction (          ) van

1) split ([hide]end[/hide]) game
2) yellow ([hide]head[/hide]) stand
3) dinner ([hide]party[/hide]) politics
4) fencing ([hide]scar[/hide]) tissue
5) reproduction (?) van

I'm unsure if (2) was the answer you were looking for, and I'm stuck on (5).

No, it wasn't. What's a yellow head? A parrot?

So is "endgame", and "split-end" is questionable.

It seems to satisfy the problem statement:

Quote:

Yes. Also, Yellowhead is a county in Canada. Google finds  a surprising number of hits for both yellowhead and "yellow head".

The answers are all common words.

Title: Re: Missing Link

2) yellow ([hide]ink[/hide]) stand

...seems better.

Title: Re: Missing Link

Maybe:

5) reproduction ([hide]service[/hide]) van

The second half seems a little weak, though.

Fair enough. But it is sort of artificial, don't you think? Like, for example, calling a house with no dogs 'dogless'.
Can you find it in any dictionary?

(Correct, towr.)

Title: Re: Missing Link

But if houses usually have dogs and this one doesn't as a feature then calling it 'dogless' wouldn't be artificial at all ;)

For 18), I have never heard of the 1st part of your answer. At least, it is not very common. Is it a proper name?

Thanks, SMQ.
However, trade names are usually restricted in their usage whereas the answer ought to be easily understood by any English-speaking person. For example, if I came up with an answer which was a Brit trade name that only Limeys had heard of I doubt if many would be very impressed.

Googling reveals that 'lucrative' never describes the iron; it describes the iron ore or iron industry, etc.
In fact, at the moment I can't think of anything suitable that 'lucrative' goes with.

Yes, because trade names are usually restricted in their usage - whereas the answer ought to be easily understood by any English-speaking person with an average level of education (imo).

Nearer to home towr, there is [hide]cargo cult[/hide] programming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cargo_cult_programming).

Title: Re: Missing Link
Post by Icarus on Mar 15th, 2007, 6:14pm
Cargo cult programming derives its name (via the mid point of cargo cult science) from the Cargo Cults that towr is referring to.

Many inland tribes on New Guinea and on remote Pacific islands first major contact with modern industrial civilization came during WWII when Australians and Americans entered their areas to set up temporary military bases.

The natives saw strange men performing certain acts (building airfields, in particular) to be followed by large amounts of goods coming out of the sky in strange metal birds. The natives attempted to explain this in terms of their religion, which taught them that you please the gods by performing special rituals, and this results in the gods rewarding you. They concluded that the cargo arriving was the gods blessings in return for the strangers performing the appropriate rituals. Ever since, "cultists" have been attempting to duplicate the "rituals" performed by those soldiers in an attempt to attract gods favor again, and receive more cargo. At times, they have constructed entire mock airfields in this attempt. On more than one occasion, a businessman trying to establish in the area has been taken in, and discovered that the supposed local operation was all a sham - not as a con, but because his local connection was in fact attempting to replicate the cargo rituals. Last I heard, the cargo cults still exist.

Referring to anything by "cargo cult" is saying that it includes pointless constructs or activity.

Yes, it's related to forum problems earlier in the day. It seems like the thread thinks there are more posts than there are (because earlier when you posted it wouldn't show up, but possibly did increase the count for the number of posts).

Tripod doesn't allow directly displaying images on their servers elsewhere; I only get a "this image is hosted by tripod" picture (because I don't have the image in cache).

I think this thread may still be a bit ... off.  For instance I'm now seeing a page 13 with no posts.  I would guess that the deleting of the above-mentioned spam post had some sort of unintended side effect on mikedagr8's post, caused by this thread being out-of-whack.  But that's just a guess.
