Title: who always lies?
Post by BMAD on May 25th, 2014, 8:34am
Mike joins a campfire with three friends.  After five minutes, Mike is bored and decides to start up a conversation:
(speaker- dialogue)

Mike- Tell me something interesting.
Adam-one of us is always a liar.
Mike-Really?
Eric- Yes. They always lie, but one of us is also always a truth teller.
Mike- Oh, cool, well then …that would mean that Sam is the ‘always liar.’
Sam- Yes, yes I am.
Mike-…What? Wait a minute.  I thought you were always a liar.
Sam- Yes I am.
Eric-He is.
Mike-He is?
Eric-yes
Sam-yes
Mike-yes?
Adam-no.
Mike-no.
Sam-no.
Mike-wait….then does that make Eric the liar?
Eric- Yes
Sam- No
Adam-yes
Mike- What??

**Who is the ‘always’ liar?

 Mike-yes?
 Adam-no.
 Mike-no.

Mike replies to its own question?

Eric- Yes. They always lie, but one of us is also always a truth teller.

If Eric lies, is each sentence a lie?  In the second sentence, is both "They always lie" and "one of us is also always a truth teller" a lie?

Mike- Oh, cool, well then …that would mean that Sam is the ‘always liar.’

Is that a statement, or a question?

In every case, it is possible that everyone sometimes lies.

---He was surprised by the response they gave before him.

Eric- Yes. They always lie, but one of us is also always a truth teller.

If Eric lies, is each sentence a lie?  In the second sentence, is both "They always lie" and "one of us is also always a truth teller" a lie?

It depends.  If he always lies then the above must be a lie.  If he only lies some of the time then it may or may not be true.

Mike- Oh, cool, well then …that would mean that Sam is the ‘always liar.’

Is that a statement, or a question?

It is a statement.  He (thinks he) is identifying the liar.

I didn't realise this was still active!

I think it is [hide]Mike, because each of the others says a combination of statements that can't all be false when taken together.[/hide]

All three of them sometimes lie and sometimes tell the truth.
This cannot be proved otherwise.

Both Sam and Eric say the're always liar, which always liar would not say.
Both Adam and Mike say Sam is not always liar, which is true.
Adam tellin truth also eliminates possibility that his statement "one of us is always liar" is a lie

I can't see any way for it to work

Mike doesn't say Sam is not the always liar.

Eric-He is.
Mike-He is?
Eric-yes
Sam-yes
Mike-yes?
Adam-no.
Mike-no.
Sam-no.

Adam is the first liar. He said something without any fact.

The answer is

Mike

sorry it wouldn't let me hide it.

I first posted this problem at http://brainden.com/forum/index.php?/topic/16151-the-always-liar/

You can see the reasoned solution here...among other fun problems.

No one is lying in this discussion. Everybody is identifying themselves.

From my point of view, [hide]Mike[/hide] is always a liar. He always responds with questions and not straight answers. The other guys kind of exclude themselves out.

Technically, yes.
If [hide]Mike[/hide] never makes a statement but only asks questions then all his statements are lies.  He can be an "always liar" without actually telling any lie.

I never lie.

Except in bed, of course.

Like, "I swear, I am not married!".

Title: Re: who always lies?

And I take it when you get back home you say: 'I swear, you are the only one!'; unless, of course, this sudden statement somehow sounds a bit suspicious.

OK, ok, married has 2 Rs.

btw
- Tell me, am I your only love?
- Of course, you are.  I don't know why you all ask the same question.

And who posed that question? Your better half? Or you?

Have a nice day, buddy!
