Seems to be digital numbers on a display where the last column is not working. Somewhat like my alarm clock.

Exactly correct!

In my case the [hide]missing parts are obscured rather than not working[/hide], but it makes no difference either way.

For me it is representing the 8bit display

If by 8-bit you mean 7-segment, then you are right.
