Creating a long term goals.

I've been mundanely going through life without any sort direction, nor long term goals, both professional nor personal.
It’s been recommended to write down all long term goals for your spiritual, mental, emotional physical, and financial destinies, with at least 10+ year outlook. Then create a series of milestones for each one, working backward. It is also vital to write reasons why you want to achieve them. It’s important to continuously refine your master plan (much like a nascent business plan, which undergoes many revisions). If it’s about finding a meaningful relationship, you should write down everything about it: about that person, how you’re going find him, your exceptions, your sacrifices, reasons for having a relationship(s). Similarly for a career goals, you should write down “whats”, “whys”, and hows.
My question is has anyone done this sort of things? How did you go about?
Please suggest!
