Title: Where are our lost mates?
Post by BNC on Jul 15th, 2006, 7:52am
A couple of recent posts made me think about "lost mates", i.e., Wu's regulars who have stopped visiting. I would like to mention them here. Hopefully I will have to edit the list -- only to remove name from it!

First, and foremost: William Wu, the founder of the site, who is apparently too busy with "real life" (phew!) to be here.

Then, there are those whom I think of as the "founding fathers" (see early posts to see why:), but have long being away
AlexH
Chronos
Eric Yeh
S. Owen
TimMann
Jonathan the Red
Pietro KC
Kozo Morimoto
(the last two actually made brief reappearances this year, but, alas, not for long)

Many other regulars have disappeared:

Kitty (many "what happend's")
Garzahd
Lightboxes
Nick H (many, many fine math puzzles)
Sir Col
James Fingas (used to be an admin here...)
Sameer
Speaker
aero_guy
wowbagger
Maryl
redPapper
Three hands
Raven (inventor of the ravenosque style)
Mattian

And probably many more I have forgotten (due only to my fault, not theirs).

Also, I must mention Chu, who never registered as far as I know, but may still be around, unable to post...

[e1]Removed TimMann and Three Hands[/e1]
[e2] Hi Sameer  :)[/e2]
[e3]Sir Col[/e3]
[e4]And raven, too[/e4]
[e5]Was glad to hear Pietro KC is back[/e5]

He was moderator actually.. Seems to have disappeared at the turn of the new year a few years ago.

I suppose in a lot fo cases it's just natural turnover. There's a number fo forums where I used to be regular that I simply abandoned.

I've seen Eric Yeh, TimMann, Kozo, and Mattian drop in on occasion, though it has been a long time fore Eric. I think Eric has (or had) the threads for his riddles and some others he was interested in marked for notification of new posts, and occasionally replied when someone posted to them. Mattian posts to the 100 prisoners & a light bulb thread every so often. As you know, he has been an active contributor.

Pietro put in some posts in the Putnam forum a month or two ago (at one time he was the most active poster there). And Sir Col was still posting in January, so I'm not ready to give up on him yet. I also recall a post or too from Kitty not too long back, and one from Raven. Maryl showed up a year or so ago after being gone for another year, but I haven't spotted her since.

NickH was also around last in January, but his posts have always been rare. I would not be surprised to see him dropping by every so often.

Though I have missed all you mentioned, and a few more, the ones that I would most like to hear from again are William and James. James simply disappeared (from this forum) at the end of 2003, and I've missed his insight.

One such case of Eric Yeh receiving notice from posting to a thread is at Bachelor's Dilemma (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=riddles_hard;action=display;num=1028246833).

Chronos is still around the Straight Dope Message
Board (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/), which is where I first heard about this this site.

I believe the last appearance of aero_guy was Collision With Row Of Spheres (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=riddles_hard;action=display;num=1043890882) on Sept 25, 2003 when he said, "I have come up with a computer model that is giving some interesting results.  More later."

William Wu not showing up raises concern about the future of this site continuing, but I think he has assured us in the past that he intends to keep it going.

If i were not to come on to a site i when i am a regular it would either be because i have outgrown and abandoned it or because my internet was messed up

The people we are talking about were forum regulars, and friends, whom we have been missing for several months at least.

This is not a "chatroom" forum, so people mostly do not put in a ton of posts. Instead, they only post when they feel they have something positive to contribute. For this reason, it is not uncommon for even regulars to go several days without posting a thing, even when they visit every day. And of course, other activities regularly take people away, sometimes for extended periods such as Noke has warned us is about to happen to him (if it hasn't already started).

Also, because people mostly drop in and check this forum for only short periods of time before moving on to other activities, it is not uncommon for even easy riddles to take several days before someone posts a solution. Please be patient with your riddles.

aw, thx guys, im touched ppl remember me!  :~)  and to think, if not for james' post to the coin flipping problem (and icarus' pointer here), id never even have seen this thread!  well, clearly everyone in the forum has moved far beyond my own limited abilities, so im afraid i have little to contribute these days.  keep up all the great puzzling, and good luck to all of you!  tty again in a couple years?  haha  :)

As author of the best logic puzzles I've ever seen, I'd hardly say your abilities are too limited for us!

Nice to hear from you again, even in passing.

Hi.

Glad to see I was missed, even if my contributions may not be as great as others. I've just been running into time/internet connection problems recently, due to dissertation/finals, graduation and other similar life-throwing-into-relative-chaos type events. However, I'll hopefully be lurking around a bit more these days, as life should be slightly more stable.

Now to catch up on the past few months of riddles...

Nice to see I was missed!  I just kind of wandered off into spending my time on the million other things I'm interested in.  I never completely stopped checking in, but I never happened to come by at the right moment to find a new puzzle that I had any insight into and that hadn't already been beaten to death, so I didn't post anything for a long time.

Did you miss the message from Eric above, or the recent visit by James Fingas?
(In addition, of course, to Sameer's posts, and there have been one or two more who have been gone for a little while, but stopped in.)

Sameer just got unlost...
As for the otehrs... well, I thought that rather than removing them from the list, and renaming them a little while later, I'd better remove only lost mates that became regulars again.
But if you feel I'm mistaken, I'm willing to be corrected (not to mention you may use your mighty modeurator powers to change the list over my head  :P)

Speaking of lost mates, Ulkesh has just put in his second visit in the last 2 years (the first was in march).

Hi!

I've always kind of been around, just not very regularly, and probably not regularly enough to make many useful posts.

Over the past few weeks I've been keeping up with most threads though, so you'll most likely be seeing more of me in the future.

One of T&B's retrograde chess puzzles was recently posted in and it amazed me to see I posted my solution to that over 3 years ago! It only seems like yesterday that we were squabbling over pigs and balloons and mirrors...

Title: Re: Where are our lost mates?

Thanks, BNC! I was checking in occasionally during my long (posting) absence. Like Sameer I'm just in the final stages of moving and the new house, which I'm hoping to moving into next weekend, has kept me busy.

Although I've only made a coulpe of posts recently it is very nice to be back, and I've certainly enjoyed reading the posts of all the familiar and talented members. You can forget all too quickly how amazing this community is and how lucky we are to be able to share insights and ideas with each other, given we would probably never have met otherwise!

I've got an idea: I will be in Silicon Valley on November 4-14. I am willing to meet the forum-mates that reside closely.

Any candidates?  ::)

Barukh, I am in California, but over 300 miles away from Silicon Valley.  I don't know if any of the regulars live around there. William Wu should be around, but I'd hardly call him a regular.

I'd try e-mailing William directly to see if he can meet you. Since he doesn't spend a lot of time here, he may not see your invitation otherwise. However, I suspect he might like to meet sometime.

(Of course, Kansas is a considerable distance from CA, so it's out of the question for me. :'()

Wow, people missed me when I went MIA  :o

I've been trying to start my own business, as well as new relationships, and life! This is my only excuse for being absent for  ~10 Mos, however I have peeked in on occasion.

Besides my love for riddles, and such, this is the most remarkable group of people I've ever found on the web (or off, for that matter). Sometimes I feel a little under-qualified to be here, but I persist just the same.

Actually I'm starting a new job next Tuesday, so that either means I will have more time (than trying to run my own business), or less time, while I'm getting a handle on their systems and methods. Either way, I was at the coast a week or so ago, and had an idea for what might be a new type of riddle. Actually, I'm sure someone has done it at some time, but I'm thinking about formalizing it into a specific methodology.

Honestly, It's much easier to make riddles than solve them!  ::)

Once again, it's good to be back, and stay tuned--this could be fun!

Yes, we missed you. You have more skill with word puzzles than just about anybody here, so being under-qualified is ridiculous. I'm looking forward to your new puzzles.
