Help needed with a sequence

Hi all,

First time poster and I have an interesting sequence I am trying to solve.

"What are the next four sets of initials in this sequence
 JM  JG  WM  GW" They do not have to be initials as in peoples names but I am completely stumped.

Many thanks for your time

I don't know the answer yet... but I have noticed something of a pattern in the sequence:

JM JG WM GW

The first set "JM" wrap the last set "GW" in the second and third set, as follows

First : JM
Last : GW
Last inside first : J GW M
Second and Third : JG WM

So
  (First, Second, Third, Fourth)
is equivalent to
  (First, Last inside First, Last)

Coincidence?  Perhaps.

Well if MJ and GJ are the next two sets, then it should follow that the sequence is:

JM JG WM GW MJ GJ MW WG

The explanation of my last two sets is as follows:

Fifth:  MJ
Sixth: GJ
Eighth inside Fifth : M ?? J
Since Fifth is inverted First,
Invert Eighth inside Fifth:  J ?? M
therefore Sixth and Seventh = JG  ?M
And since 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th are the inverse of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, it stands to reason that the missing character is a W.

The question, is, tseuG, how did you get from GW to MJ?

I have another theory:

In base 4, assume that each of the letters in the sequence (jm jg wm gw) have numeric equivalents, and apply the following values:

m = 0
j = 1
w = 2
g = 3

The sequence becomes:

10 13 20 32  (base 4)

convert to decimal:

4 7 8 14

This decimal sequence has a pattern:

4 7 8 14 12 21 16 28 ...

Convert back to base 4

10 13 20 32 30 111 100 130 ...

Apply the letter mappings:

jm jg mw gw gm jjj jmm jgm ...

Again - just a thought.

Of course, the sequence (4, 7, 8, 14) has a number of potential projections...

example:

4 7 8 14 12 21 16 28 ...

OR

4 7 8 14 16 28 32 56 ....

OR

4 7 8 14 15 24 25 37 ... (+1, +3, +1, +6, +1, +9, +1, +12, ...)

ETC.

So it's anybody's guess.

My gut tells me the sequence is an english sequence to which we're exposed in our everyday lives.  There was another posting in this forum which mentioned the sequence (1, 2, D, ...) the answer to which was just that - a sequence we see in our everyday lives.  I won't give the answer to that riddle in this forum.  But I think we should all go home and look at our washing machines, dishwashers, televisions, vcrs, etc. and look for JM JG WM GW...

Another example of this is the sequence (O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, ...).  It's an english sequence.  I think gkeech's sequence is one of these.

Don't know if this is relevant, but all are initials of former Presidents of the United States:

JM= James Madison or James Monroe
JG= James Garfield
WM= William McKinley
GW= George Washington

I can't think of any significance to listing presidents in that order.

Perhaps there is a different list of people with those initials for whom the order does make sense? Kings or PMs?
