betting on World Series -----
my bookie wont take a bet on the world Series, but he will take a bet on any individual game. the odds are even money, i want to win or lose $1,000 - how do i bet each game to achieve my result? Huh

WHiskey Tango Foxtrot nailed it - his numbers are to win or lose $2,000 but use 1000*1/15 etc in his solution instead.

To restate the problem more clearly, i want to win $1,000 if team A wins the series but i cant bet on the series, i have to bet on individual games to achieve a result of winning or losing $1,000.

thanks

Bet 1000 on the last game..?

I don't know anything about the world series, so there's too little information for anything else.
(And I don't feel like digging up the other thread at the moment)

I'll help you out, Icarus.  I've been doing a little better with the search function lately.

Wow, that is a monster of a link.

If you intended for us to solve the riddle in a different way, make your question more specific.  For example, what would your bets be if you wanted to gain or lose exactly $1,000?

I'm not sure what's special about Vivek's solution - sure, it gives you at least $1000 dollars if team A wins, but there are infinitely many ways to do that.  If you want to win exactly $1000 if team A wins, SWF's solution works.  It's the only one where you win exactly $1000 if your team wins and lose exactly $1000 when your team loses.

Like WTF pointed out, you're both often-posting five-green-star uperpuzzler moderators with no personalized picture, so on a quick glance it's an easy mistake -- one I've almost made many times myself.

Actually, Icarus does have a picture:

so far none of you geniuses have correctly solved this riddle. I was incorect in stating WHiskey Tango solved it - his solution is incorrect. Tongue

you can bet on any, none or all the games, you must win at least $1,000 if your team wins, and lose no more than $1,000 if your team loses.

good luck

Look at  Alan's  solution in the thread below
http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=riddles_med ium;action=display;num=1035965274;start=11#11

It seems to work when starting with $2,000  to win $2,000 if your team wins the series or lose $2,000 if your team looses the series while betting on just individual games. It can be easily adjusted for a $1,000 starting amount to win or lose as per your preference.

Some of us "geniuses" don't know enough about "the" World Series to understand the question.

Under what conditions does "my" team win? lose? are draws possible?

I'll assume that "the" World Series referred to is the World Series of Major League Baseball here in the 'states.  In that case, it's a simple best-four-of-seven series (terminated when either team has won a total of four games, so anywhere from four to seven games may be played) with no ties possible.

There's a typo in alan's solution in that it should read "0-3 500 0 250 250", but otherwise it appears correct, unless mingus33 is looking for a strategy when all bets must be placed before hand (e.g. $300 on game 1, $500 on game 2, etc.) (and, presumably, bets on games not played would be refunded?
