If you're stuck, think this part of the problem statement through again:
"But the definition of f(u, v) = (u + v)^2 implies also that @f/@v = 2(u+v) = 2y." Rather suspicious in this context, isn't it?
 
I really like the conclusion of that riddle:
"Thus we should never divide by variables named "y" while manipulating equations, because y = 0."  Smiley
