How about: he blew up a balloon and held it under water for ten minutes?

Neither of those solutions fit the puzzle, nor does the idea I had: The boy went to a nearby tunnel under a river, and held his breath there. The balloon certainly counts as equipment. If the boy drowned, he did not hold his breath. Neither did he hold his breath if he was breathing normally some place that was under water, and unless the kid had truly well trained lungs, he would not be able to hold his breath for 10 minutes anywhere. Now if the kid had said "I can stay underwater for longer than 10 minutes without using equipment", that would be another matter. One other point, A: At the top of all the regular forums is a thread titled WRITE GOOD THREAD TITLES. PLEASE pay attention to it!

technically, you're right.. You have to (try to) breath underwater to drown.. So I really meant something more like 'he suffocated'. He didn't breath and died, and being dead didn't need to breath the rest of the time he was under water and thus won..

How about this: The boy held his breath 10 minutes, but not continously. That is, he held his breath for 30 seconds, came up for air, dived again to add another 30 seconds etc..

The magician bet that the boy could, but he couldn't.

The answer: He filled a glass of water and placed it on top of his head. (Sorry about the title thing!!)

That is a horrible answer, not only is the boy using equipment, the glass, but he isn't holding his breath either. Did you come up with this riddle yourself?

It's okay about the title, you aren't the first to need their attention drawn to it. The riddle is okay, but it needs rewording.

I wasn't going to comment on this one until I saw that the so-called solution to this does not meet the condions of no equipment and holding of breath. At least the following fits the question: Boy gets in waist deep water cups his hands together, palms facing downward underwater. He dunks his head underwater and exhales some of his breath below the hands so the bubbles are held underwater by his hands. He can then surface his face while holding his breath underwater with his hands.

Excellent! A solution that matches the problem as worded. And one difficult enough to see, that it justifies placing this problem in the medium category.
