Construct the shortest possible game where one side delivers mate, but makes only pawn moves.

Maybe I have a solution with seven moves, but I haven't verified it on a board yet - it's all in my head.

Not bad, towr. I take it you mean 11 half-moves. Either way, there is a shorter mate. Quote:Maybe I have a solution with seven moves, but I haven't verified it on a board yet - it's all in my head. |
| wowbagger, assuming you mean half-moves, then I think that's where it will remain. [But I secretly suspect that you both mean full moves. Hehe.]

The best I've come up with is 9 half moves. Seven seems inconceivable.

| Actually, I did mean seven moves (six Black moves). I haven't thought about cho's claim yet, but here's the first solution that I arrived at: 1. e4 f5 2. exf5 Na6 3. g4 Nb8 4. g5 Na6 5. f6 Nb8 6. g6 Na6 7. f7++ Obviously I didn't exhaust the possibility of Black moves helping White. Blame it on my reluctance to solve chess puzzles blind.

As everyone seems to have given up on this, here is an 8-ply solution: 1. f3 e5 2. Kf2 h5 3. Kg3 h4+ 4. Kg4 d6 (or d5) mate

I think your solution needs another check, mate. There's one escape move.

4 half moves, two moves per color. However I don't know how to write hidden answers, as I am new to this forum. Further, there are two possible (though very similar) solutions.

Whoops, seems like I miss read the problem. I thought that "only pawn moves" was an assertion about just one side, but after rereading, I believe it means that the mating side must use only pawn moves. Sorry for the false solution.

| jkit, I hesitate to point this out, but your solution is called Fool's Mate. 1. f3 (or f4) e6 (or e5) 2. g4 Qh4 mate -------------------------------------------------------------------- The mating side makes pawn moves only. The losing side can make any legal moves.
