This is theoretically won, as the shorter diagonal from the promotion square is three squares or less. At least, that's what I think the limit is.

You have to prevent Black's bishop from controlling b8, of course. I'll have to seriously think this over sometime.  Wink

Ok, how about this:

1. Ba5  Bg3
2. Be1! Bh2
3. Bf2  Bf4
4. Ba7  Bh2
5. Bb8  Bg1
6. Bg3  Ba7
7. Bf2!

If Black moves his bishop to f4 or e5 instead of to g3 on his first move, White will move correspondingly (d2, c3).
Note that moving the Black bishop to c7 doesn't help.

The only remaining possibility for Black is therefore
1. ...  Bd6
which is met by
2. Bb4  Bh2  (2. ... Bc7, 3. Bc5)
3. Ba5!

In the position at the beginning, it is vital to keep the Black King away from the square a6. From there he would control a7 and thus prevent the manoeuvre allowing White to gain control of b8.

The winning method does not involve this idea. In fact, White cannot prevent Kc6 - b5 - a6.
But Black must defend against TWO threatened manouevres which allow White to promote.

Yeah, it's true that 2. Be1 wins quickly.
However, Black needn't present his Bishop as an easy target on g3, after which White can control the
important g1-a7 diagonal.

Instead, 1....Bd6 denies White an entry point to the diagonal.

By the way, it's a pity there's no way of inserting a proper board.
Another puzzle site that I know of allows the display of positions using the syntax [Chess] FEN position [/Chess].

I had this possibility in mind, as you can read in my previous post.  Wink
However, it doesn't work as it's only leading to the point of departure.  Sad
Looks like this one requires even more thinking...

Quite right.
