Male bees hatch from unfertilized eggs and so have a mother but no father.  Female bees hatch from fertilized eggs.  How many ancestors does a male bee have in the 12th generation back?  How many of these are males?

Quick by hand:

Gen 0: M
Gen 1: F
Gen 2: FM
Gen 3: FM F
Gen 4: FM F FM
Gen 5: FM F FM FM F
Gen 6: FM F FM FM F FM F FM
Gen 7: FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F
Gen 8: FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM
Gen 9: FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F
Gen 10: FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM
Gen 11: FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F
Gen 12: FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM FM F FM F FM FM F FM F FM

So that's 233 ancestors in the 12th generation, of which 89 are male, if I didn't make any typing or counting errors...

But what if the bees are incestuous (like rabbits are well known to be)?

Then there may be only one.

Two. Every generation descends from at least one female, so every generation before the first has to have parents for a female - so you need both a male and a female.

Unless, of course, the hypothetical ancestor is a gymnastic incestuous hermaphrodite...

Well, the generations might mix, mightn't they.
Queens can generally last more than one season/generation.

We can replace non-incestuous bees, male and female, with highly incestuous rabbits, new-born and mature.

If you want to get the same result, you'd have to look at future generations, not past ones.

You could start with a single female that generates a male, and they together produce as many generation as you (er.. they) like.

I just have one question. Why does everyone use java and not C++?

Yeah I know, but I was just surprised nobody mentioned the F-word.

I didn't use java, I used javascript.
Because C/C++ doesn't run in my browser's location bar.

For a while i did not realise what the F-world was. Then I wrote up the list:

s1 = 1 (M)
s2 = 1 (F)
s3 = 2 (FM), that happens to be s1+s2
s4 = 3 (FM, F) what is nothing else the next steps after the two individual parts, i.e. F and M (s1, s2), so the next ones are s2 + s3
s5 = 5 (FM F FM). Again s4 we know is s2+s3 and so s5 can be derived as the next ones right after them (s3 + s4)
And so on
s6 = s4 + s5

s(n) = s(n-2) + s(n-1)

So it is that F. Now I only need Dr. Langdon to solve it.

Actually Sophie Neveu would be a better choice.

Yes, it was in Da Vinci Code, a riddle involving the Fibonacci sequence
