This should perhaps be in easy.

You are South, playing Rubber Bridge and reach the contract of 6D (bidding was lost).

West leads a heart.

You see:

Code:

AQ95
62
AKQ3
AK3

K4
AK5
JT95
J972

How would you play this?  The hands are given in order of S,H,D,C. The hand at the bottom with the Spade King is the south hand and the one with Spade A is the dummy.

Well, on a 3-2 trump split, it's easy - draw trumps, cash winners, ruff a spade, and lose a club.

On a 4-1 trump split, you could draw two rounds of trumps, cash AK spades, ruff a spade (high), draw the remaining trumps, and then cash winners, again losing a club.

Not sure how to play around a 5-0 split.

5-0 trumps is hopless and 3-2 is easy. Correct.

In case of 4-1, on your line of play,  you go down if
East is 1-5-4-3.

Assuming there are no voids about, there is a 100% play.

OK here is the solution I had in mind:

Win the HA, and play DJ and D to A.

If West has 4 trumps:
Play spade to King and spade towards A.
If West ruffs, you play low. Now you can throw 2 clubs from hand on spades and ruff a heart in dummy.
If West plays lows, you win the A, and ruff a spade high. You draw trumps and claim.

If East has 4 trumps:
    Play a heart towards hand.
If East ruffs, you can throw a club from dummy on the heart and ruff dummy's losing spade in hand.
If East plays low, you win the HK draw one round of trump and ruff a heart in dummy.
  Then play S to K.
If East ruffs, you can throw 2 clubs from hand on the spades.
If East plays low, you can win and draw trump and concede a club in the end.
