Title: MasterMind II soln Post by zeb on Jul 30th, 2002, 1:08pm G: Green R: Red Y: Yellow B: Brown L: Light Blue D: Dark Blue black peg: . White peg: o reversing the order, my apologies: 1) LDRG o 2) LYGB .o 3) GGYL .. 4) YGLB .o 5) ----? .... 1) tells us one of these is part of the solution but no others. L has no obvious conflicts D breaks at 3), since if LDG are all not part of the solution, then 3) can’ t have two black pegs. R likewise breaks at 3) for the same reason G has no obvious conflicts. Assume G is the o from 1), LDR are all out. 2) Either Y, G or B is the . If Y, then G isn’t in either of the last 2 so GY-- would be true. But that cannot be since it would give at least one white peg for 3) instead of the .. we see. If G, then --G- is all we know and Y or B is misplaced. Y can’t be the misplaced one since 3) would then show a white peg. For there to be only black pegs would put Y and G on the same spot, so Y isn’t the one. If B is misplaced, then 3) would not work since YL are not true for this tree, leaving GG as true and sitting on the only spots where B could be true. B ain't it. So G is not the one. Which leaves L. But, to be sure (or if you start with L instead of G)… Assuming L, 1) tells us DRG are all out. So 3) then tells us --YL is part of the solution. B cannot be part of the solution. If it were, then B-YL or –BYL would make 4) show 3 pegs, and 2) would show 3 pegs, which they don’t. So that leaves only Y and L for the remaining spots. L can’t be in the first spot because of 1). So, Y must be there. 2) tells us Y is in the 2nd spot too, since L is still the white peg from 1). YYYL. |

Title: Re: MasterMind II soln Post by Snack on Aug 21st, 2002, 3:23pm I got exactly the same thing. I started by going through all the possibilities created by 3 and then working from there. :-) YYYL |

Title: Re: MasterMind II soln Post by allie on Nov 14th, 2002, 9:01am *Sigh* Nope, I can't see it. If indeed 3 tells us that --YL must be true, then 2 would have 2 "o"'s (since the colors are right but the position isn't). Instead it has ".o". So if you accept that YL are in the final, it's either "L-Y-" (which can't be because of 3) or "-Y-L" (which can't be beacuse of 3). So "YL" can't be part of the final solution because 3 says they would have to be in 3rd and 4th position, and 2 does not have 2 color only marks to support that. *Sigh again* Did I explain that well? Can anyone explain this one to me? |
