Title: Cryptic Crossword Clues
Post by Aryabhatta on Mar 31st, 2008, 11:13am
I intend this thread to be similar to the Rebus thread we had... people post cryptic crossword clue(s) and the others try to solve it. Apologies if there is already a thread...

If you don't know what a cryptic crossword is, you can find information here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptic_crossword

To start off, here is one:

1) cut cut cut (6,2)

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues
Post by FiBsTeR on Mar 31st, 2008, 2:21pm
Does the (6,2) refer to something about the length of the clue, or is that part of the puzzle?

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues
Post by Aryabhatta on Mar 31st, 2008, 3:17pm
(6,2) means answer is two words, one 6 letters long and the other 2 letters long.

So, yes, it talks about the length of the answer and is (usually) not part of the clue.

None so far. I suggest, with your answer you also include how it fits the clue. That way if a clue permits more than one answer, we can agree to that.

That answer may not be what you had in mind, but just in case it is, I suppose I'm up for the next clue.
If your clue was 1 across, mine is an intersecting down. But I won't say where it intersects yet. And if my first answer was wrong, it may not intersect at all. But I'm going to try to make this an actual crossword.

No sound before thugs take back streets (13)

Your answer is acceptable tohuvabohu, though I had a different answer in mind! [hide] editedIT, first cut = edit, second cut = edit, third cut = the meaning[/hide]

I read it as:
{No sound (music abrev)}{synonym for thug}{ekat}... all means streets.

But the only 13 letter word I can think of for streets is "thoroughfares".

(damn it, my head seems to be filled with cotton wool)

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues
Post by tohuvabohu on Apr 2nd, 2008, 6:23am
Now that I see it, I think Grimbal actually got it first, but he was being cryptic.  So the first intersecting clue should belong to him. (My clue doesn't link with the correct 1 across, unless it's not 1 across. So let's just table this clue until we find somewhere it fits).
Noke, your head isn't completely filled with cotton wool. You missed a couple cryptic clues, but you're in the right area.

Uh... could you please tell me how to decrypt my clue?  Not that I don't know (how silly, who would believe that?  Hey, I wrote the clue!), but I want to check that you've got it right.

Okay, maybe not. I just thought censoring could be a cryptic reference to a type of editing, without using the offending word. It was your suggestion of using "it" as the second half that gave me my aha moment, and I thought it might not just have been coincidentally correct. Plus the fact that your guess didn't make any sense at all as a serious guess.
For a really cryptic hint at the right answer how about [hide]ebbtides[/hide]

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues

My answer was just because when you censor a movie you just cut here and there, you cut, cut, cut.

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues

Well, my cryptic seems to have killed this thread. Before everybody goes home for the weekend, maybe I need to give a clue or two, or suggest others go ahead and post additional cryptics without waiting for solutions.

Hints:
[hide]I was going for a 1 down answer to link with "nicked it" so the first letter is N.[/hide]

[hide]The straight clue within the clue needs to be interpreted a little more broadly than Noke was thinking. [/hide]

[hide]a couple standard cryptic code words that Noke missed in attempting to parse the riddle: sound and before[/hide]

And a second cryptic that I thought of at the same time, but couldn't quite get the wording the way I'd like it, but maybe it's a little easier anyway:

To be or not, East to West, a man yet not. (5)

I've not got any new clue to offer, but the answer to tohuvabohu's is:

I blame the Aussie cryptic crosswords.
They're disappointingly easy, I got very out of practice.

Ummm, a meagre one...

Their corpse set to dance (11)

I solved Noke's, but I won't give it away because I used some help to figure it out.
Thought I'd offer one more:

Two coppers remember half a salad vegetable. (8)

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues

that's eight letters, right?

Since Noke's clue was solved (I didn't get it, though, I guess it is [hide] anagram of their corpse [/hide]), I will post a another one:

I don't know if the plan was to take these cryptics one at a time, but a couple more came to me that I'd like to try out on you.

Shades of serenaded young ladies (10)

East meets West with honor (6)

And I'm still looking for an answer to

To be or not to be East to West a man yet not a man. (5)
(I know I've changed the wording a couple times. If anyone figures it out, tell me how you think it should have been phrased)

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues
Post by Aryabhatta on Apr 15th, 2008, 6:20pm
I say, that is an excellent idea.
Perhaps we should create the final partially filled grid now itself with spaces for other clues (i.e instead of . in your ascii image, let us fix the grid by putting in _ at the right spots)

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues
Post by tohuvabohu on Apr 15th, 2008, 6:36pm
I think we maybe need to wait until these clues are solved, and let the future clue writers find a good spot for a good word. There's also probably a much more efficient (or easily expandable) grid than the one I came up with.

All those dots are unfortunate, but when I tried printing it with just spaces, the forum software insisted on reformatting multiple spaces. If someone knows how to correct that, it might look better.

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues
Post by tohuvabohu on Apr 19th, 2008, 7:00am
I added a few more clues that I think are fairly simple, to help you figure out the first letter of the unsolved clues.  I hope people haven't given up on these.
I also realized that in cryptic clues some types of clues have to be across, some have to be down. I didn't correctly follow that guideline in this grid, so a future reworking of the grid might be necessary.

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues
Post by Aryabhatta on Apr 19th, 2008, 6:59pm
I wrote a quick image generator to help us view the grid better.

http://puzzles.members.winisp.net/Tools/crosswordGen.aspx?width=15&height=14&name=G R I D 1&1=1,12,,ALOUD&2=2,4,,:SUNGLASSES&3=2,6,,NUMBER&4=3,3,CUCUMBER,&5=4,2,,TERPSICHORD&6=4,11,RUED,&7=4,13,,ESTEEM&8=5,1,NEIGHBORHOODS,&9=8,7,:HEARTFELT,HATRED&10=10,4,EDITEDIT,

The url used was:
[edit]Removed long url. Please see the url of above image.[/edit]

In the url you give the width, height and for each clue number, you give the row, column, across letters, down letters. The usage should be pretty clear. (I expect bugs, so please let me know if you find something weird).

For example, for clue 1, we give 1=1,12,,ALOUD.

As the grid changes, all we would need to change is the url.

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues

9 across looks like [hide] heartfelt [/hide]

So we are upto:
1 down: Whispering is not allowed sound (5 )
2 down: Shades of serenaded young ladies (10 )
3 down: Anaesthetic song (6 )
4 across: Two coppers remember half a salad vegetable (8 )
5 down: Their corpse set to dance (11 )
6 down: To be or not to be, East, West, a man who's not "to be" (5 )
6 across: Regretted impolite sound (4 )
7 down: East meets west with honor (6 )
8 across: No sound before thugs take back streets (13 )
9 across: Set articles right, left, left, beginning at the end, like you mean it (9 )[/s]
9 down: strange dearth of hostility (6 )
10 across: Cut, cut, cut (6,2 )

Only one clue left:
6 down: To be or not to be, East, West, a man who's not "to be" (5 )

Seems like we are likely done with the previous grid.

So here is a new grid (using the image generator, so that it is easy to create partially filled grid images {see url of the image to guess usage}):

Let us call this GRID2. Any clues given for this grid should reference this name in case we have multiple grids being discussed at the same time.

http://puzzles.members.winisp.net/Tools/crosswordGen.aspx?width=15&height=15&autofill=true&name=G R I D 2&1=1,2,!1,!6&2=1,4,!1,!4&3=1,6,!1,!8&4=1,10,!1,!6&5=1,12,!1,!10&6=1,14,!1,!8&7=2,1,!8,!1&8=2,8,!1,!6&9=2,10,!6,!1&10=4,1,!10,!1&11=4,12,!4,!1&12=6,1,!6,!1&13=6,4,!1,!10&14=6,8,!8,!1&15=8,2,!6,!8&16=8,9,!6,!1&17=8,10,!1,!8&18=9,8,!1,!6&19=10,1,!8,!1&20=10,6,!1,!6&21=10,10,!6,!1&22=10,14,!1,!6&23=12,1,!4,!1&24=12,6,!10,!1&25=12,12,!1,!4&26=14,1,!6,!1&27=14,8,!8,!1

Let us try to stick to this grid and start giving clues which fit with previous ones.

I'm still baffled by Grid 1: 9A

Title: Re: Cryptic Crossword Clues
Post by tohuvabohu on Apr 24th, 2008, 5:31am
Yes, that's what I intended for 1 down.

Explanation of Grid1 9 across

[hide]Set articles right, left, left, beginning at the end, like you mean it
"Set" just indicates some letter rearrangement
"articles"=the a
"right"=r
"left,left"=tfel
"beginning at the end"= move the beginning letter (T) to the end
=heartfelt. "Like you mean it" is a poor definition of heartfelt, sincerely would be better, but I wanted something you couldn't just look up on thesaurus.com[/hide]

The middle word is [hide]not[/hide].

As for 8 Down, I'm not sure it is a standard sort of clue either.
Rephrase the clue to make a synonym, and the answer is an example of it.
