Title: Way to turn key in car door to unlock it
Post by GSP on Apr 17th, 2004, 2:50am
Which way should the key turn in a car door to unlock it?

ans.: i think we shud turn it the opposite way of the direction for locking it...i.e for locking if we turn it clockwise, then for unlocking, we shud turn it anticlockwise.

I don't have a car, So I really can't say which way it ought to turn to unlock.
For all I know, it can be different for different cars.

Although, as said in the first post, it's invariably the opposite of the way you turn when locking it.

It is indeed different for different cars--and sometimes different for opposite doors on the same car.  My Dodge, for instance, turns CCW on the driver side and IIRC CW on the passenger side to unlock.  My SO's Chevy turns CW on the driver side--I don't remember the passenger side...

Lets say - if u turn the key in x direction the car gets locked, and if u turn it in y direction the car gets unlock.
So if the car is locked - this means it was turned in x direction .ie. it no more can be turned in the same direction again.

So i guess the ans should be turn the key in the direction it can be turned. Lock has just two states : close and open.

Then, even better just turn it any way. If it's locked, it will unlock and vice versa. Why stick to one direction?

my honda civic turns CCW to unlock the driver-side and CW to unlock the passenger side.  I think this is correct.  my house, however, turn CW to unlock.  I generally think, the top goes towards the engine if i'm about to start driving, and towards the back if i'm stopping (and locking it).

I always imagine the top of the key cylinder  throwing a bolt, and the bolt has to cover the open side of the door. i.e., for a door hinged on the right (like a right-hand-drive car door - which is what I'm familiar with) then the key is turned CCW to throw the top of the key cylinder to the left. This explains why the passenger side door locks/unlocks the other way round.

I think it's important to mention that the car may be unlocked to start with. If you don't take that into account and give interviewer your algorithm, you might have a deadlock (important concept in operating systems and thread programming). So I suggest that whatever you say make sure to comment on whether the door is locked or not

I can't say, since my car uses a button.

But I do know that not all cars unlock in the opposite direction than they lock.

That's real tricky one but I guess it varies car to car. Better to use the remote and don't bother about the keys at all  ;D

Actually, I did come across a car which turns the same way, both for locking and unlocking, i.e. you can only turn the key in one direction. Although, in hindsight, you might accidentally break off your key in the lock..

For some cars, it would depend on where you bought the padlock.  :P

I think like Reg Skelton, with the imaginary bolt above the key that needs to be pushed left or right.  It seems to me doors (in the house) work like that.

In my car, near the border of the door there is a knob that moves up and down when I open and close the door.  It is also placed in such a way that you can imagine that key moves a wheel that moves the knob up and down.

Previously I had a VW Polo.  The door unlocked counter-clockwise (on the front left door).
But I changed my car.
Now I have a Toyota Yaris.  There the door unlocks clockwise.
After locking it, I still have to pull the handler to be sure I turned it the right way.
