Not that there's really anything wrong with selecting text to view it.. For example, the HTML code, <span style='background-color:#cccccc;color:#cccccc;'>Test</span> (although you may need to use <layer> tags for Netscape compatibility) would create a solid block of light grey. Highlighting the area would contrast the hidden text in the same way as your current system works.   The advantage of this system is that quoted text would still be hidden.
