Title: trouble logging in
Post by BenVitale on Aug 21st, 2010, 1:03pm
Something has changed. I had trouble logging in.

I signed as: benvitale, then as Benvitale. The system didn't recognize me.
And finally, I signed as BenVitale. I got in.
I didn't have this problem in the past. The system is more sensitive to letter case.

I have not experienced that.  ::)

The system has always been case sensitive. That's how Grimbal came to have one moderator account as grimbal (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?action=viewprofile;username=grimbal) and a newbie account as Grimbal (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?action=viewprofile;username=Grimbal). (Although both show as Grimbal when posting, because you can set the displayed name separately from the account name).

Yes, but some firefox wise guy decided case-insensitive is the way to go.
So, not only it will save the same password for both cases, but it will "helpfully" correct the case for you to the one it saved.
I reported that as a bug, but it seems they don't seem to think that is a problem.
Workaround:
- never save either of both password
- stop using one of the names
- save the "login" page to disk to log in with your alternate case.  Luckily, the password is saving according to the login page location, not the login page target.  It requires some understanding of HTML
- ditch firefox, use Safari or Chrome

Thanks. I'm using Firefox and IE8. So I need to use another browser. I've become so comfortable with these browsers.

I didn't have this problem before. Since I re-installed Firefox and and installed IE8, few things have changed.

I've noticed that IE8 blocks some files from being downloaded, for example pdf and doc files.

Or just clear the saved password, and don't make a mistake when you save it the next time.

Though I'd opt for not saving passwords in the first place.
