A young soldier was fighting against Germany.  He saw Hitler perfectly in his sights.  Although he had him in his sights out of respect he did not fire.  Why was this?

Maybe, he was in a church or somewhere where shooting someone is not considered too appropriate?

A few guesses:

1. He didn't want to shoot a dead person.
2. He saw A. Hitler's father (an old man)
3. It wasn't WWII he fought at, the Hitler he saw was a civilian
4. It was an artwork of H.

Does the answer have anything to do with Hitler's half-brother, Alois, or Alois' son, William Patrick?

I've been looking, and I find no reference to Hitler being captured in WWI, and I can think of no other reason for someone to, out of respect, not shoot an enemy soldier. At the end of WWI, Hitler was in Berlin recovering from a gas attack, so he would not have been in any soldier's sites. Perhaps if Hitler was involved in one of the Christmas gatherings of soldiers from both sides of the lines that occured. But in this case, it is seems unlikely that Hitler was one of the initiators, who would have been the only ones in someone's sites.

I'm pretty sure the first (and correct) part turtler7 mentioned is the WW I thing. I know Hitler faught in WW I, but I don't know either whether he was captured. Maybe Hitler had a red cross (or a white flag) and was fetching the dead and/or wounded from the battlefield?

::Hitler was wounded in WWI (in the leg AFAIK). Maybe he was at a field hospital at the time::

As I said, I can find no mention of Hitler being captured in WWI. He was wounded in a gas attack, but was shipped back to Berlin, where he was recovering at the end of the war. Since Germany did not fall in WWI - peace was negotiated without conquest - I don't believe he had any "respectful" encounters with enemy troops in this.

He may have been part of the Christmas gatherings between enemy combatants that WWI is well-known for, but knowing of particular testimony from some trooper for whom this occured, I would not bet on it. Most soldiers from both sides didn't come out until the first few had led the way and the guns had been set aside. Even with testimony, I would be skeptical unless there was other corroborating evidence. This would be too easy and likely a claim for some aging WWI vet seeking a little glory to make in later years.

So, turtler7 - was it a christmas gathering? Or was Hitler ever in the hands of the Allies in WWI? Or are we all barking up the wrong tree?

Nitpicking: AFAIK, he was wounded twice -- once is the "middle" of the war, and again (this time in a gas attack) near the end.

Sorry, pablo, but turtler7 was quite specific in his wording of the problem. A subtle hint follows...

Although we could have said...

The young soldier was newly recruited into the British army and was being trained to use a sniper rifle. The trainer said to them, "Okay, men, I want you to use your scopes to lock on to the target ahead of you; but don't fire until I give the order!" Each of the targets, in the practice range, had a picture of Hitler attached. Out of respect, the young soldier had Hitler in his sights, but did not fire.  Wink
