Susan's father faces his five daughters, and tells them all to do something.

Only Susan obeys.
Her father says something to her, and in response she stomps away and sulks.

What happened?

I'm new to these boards...may I answer straight away, or do I have to ask permission first?

You can answer straight away.
You can hide your answer with [hide]<answer>[/hide], that way people can remain clueless if they want Tongue

hello PseudoPserious, and welcome.

No you do not need to ask permission, and may post as you wish. It is customary on this board, though, to hide answers / hints. To do that, include your answer between the "hide" tags, like this: [hide] Text to be hidden [/hide].
For example, placing a text between these tags will result in: (select with mouse to see)
Hidden text between tags

As a general rule, most boards (including this one) have their own customs. You'll pick it up as you go...

[e]And of course, you should note that if you'll take too long to write a message, some hasty moderator may jump and post before you do  Tongue[/e]

Well, in that case...

Father, may I?

Would my first post be considered a hint?

Well, it seems I totaly misunderstood you before...
If I do understand now, It seems you're suggesting a kid must ask his parents' permission beforeperforming their orders? Seems kind of harsh to me!

In any case, the scenario described here may take place even in the most liberal families.

Sorry, but non of the above.

The father actually told his daughters to do something very specific, literally.

Ummm... taking the hint,
"Take three steps forward," says Father.
Susan takes three steps froward.
"You didn't say "Father, may I?"," Father says.
Susan stomps away in a huff, angry that she had practically lost the game.

The version played around here is called "Simon Says". On the off-chance that some readers are from cultures with nothing like it: The game has a caller who faces the participants. The caller calls out instructions for actions the participants should make. At the same time the caller also does an action. But the action the caller does may or may not be what he requested, and the participants should only act at all if the caller says "Simon says" to do the action. Anyone who performs the wrong action, or performs an action at all when the caller did not say "Simon says" first is eliminated from the game.

So daddy has a game going with his daughters. He calls out "simon says pat your belly" while rubbing his head. All of his daughters are too quick for this and pat their bellies. Next he calls out "Touch your toes". Susan quickly obeys, but the quads payed better attention and stood still. Dad tells her "I didn't say 'Simon says'". She stomps away and sulks at being so quickly eliminated.

I'm familiar with "Simon says", and that's what I was thinking. I understand from the answers that there is a (version of the same perhaps) game called "father may I", in which the players are required to ask permission before complying with the "order" given. I havn't heard about this game (if it really exists).

Simon Says seems to fit best. There's a game called Mother May I, but the rules I found for it on the Web don't match the riddle.  (I've never played this game, but I'd heard of it, so I did a web search for the rules.)  See  http://www.parentcenter.com/refcap/fun/games/7410/7454/12680.html.
