Umbrella Director's Cut

It is pouring rain but at least it isn't windy. A psychiatrist is preparing in his flat to go to his office, as he has several patients today. He owns an adult umbrella in good working order. It's in umbrella stand near the front door where he always keeps it. There are no other protections from rain at his disposal. He doesn't take the umbrella on his way out. Why not?

His practice is right next door, and he's being considerate to his wife, who also needs to go out and will want to use the umbrella?

Or, even more convenient: He lives in a flat, so his practice could be on another floor in the same building.
