Relaxing at a pub

Relaxing at a pub (revised) David orders a beer for himself at a pub. Arnold, who wasn't coerced and under no circumstances does he pay other people's bills, not even to his next-of-kin, pays the bill. Why? Relaxing at a pub (original) David orders a beer at a pub. Arnold, who wasn’t coerced and is very adamant about not paying other people’s bills, not even to his next-of-kin, pays the bill. Why?

| It's not April Fools' Day, but because of your fine answer, it feels as if though it is. In my version of the riddle, David orders the drink for himself.

Arnold owes money to David OR Arnold asked David for a favor. David agreed to help on condition that Arnold buys him a glass of beer.

Arnold is very Scottish, but as a regular payer of his debts, it is gallantry he lacks and he doesn't pay his debts through the beverages at the pub. Only the original version was considered thus far. From now on one should consider only the revised version.

It's David Arnold. He isn't a Scot. He is just cheap.

Having just enjoyed a splendid pub lunch, David goes to the bar to order himself a pint of beer. Meanwhile, Arnold pays the bill for his own meal.
