The Safe Behind A Painting

There are two adjacent paintings on the living room wall. The painting on the left is The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali and the painting on the right is Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. Only the owner of the house knows behind which painting is a hidden safe full of money. A smart thief enters the living room and looks at the two wall paintings. He knows behind which painting the safe is. How? No unmentioned actions or objects have a role in the riddle.

Replace both paintings with one: 3S 3S 1E 3S 3W 1N 1E 2E 3W 3S 2E 1W 2N 1N 1W 1S 1N 2E 1W 1N 1E 3N 1E 00 2W and add one question - "what is the first key?"

Assuming the number/letter combo represents a distance and direction, starting at the NE corner visits every cell on the grid, so I would assume that's "the first key." --SMQ

In the mid 1990-ies I worked with an Italian gentleman who, being an active bowler, used to say "It's not the mighty arm - it's the tender touch". So - nice touch unlocking this mystery, SMQ. You are correct.
