A picture is worth a thousand words

The year is 1954. A female reporter purposely took a picture of a man with a camera at night even though his picture was not important to her at the time. Why? Fill in the omitted facts.

Perhaps she wanted to use the Camera's flash to get a better view of the man.

You have partially solved the riddle, in that the flash is very important but your explanation for using it is a bit lame. I am looking for something more substantial here.
