Once he got out there was no way for him to return to his prison even though he did not change regarding his robberies. Can you explain it?

Not if it would make a good shell, anyway. 
Anyway, to keep the same idea but change the protagonist:
The man, after getting out of jail, went on an eating binge and got so fat that he wouldn't fit back in the prison doors!
