A cowboy on foot, whose horse was shot by Indians, lost consciousness alone and far away from civilization. When he came to, he realized that, if he hadn’t had a hat, he would’ve most certainly died rather than survived. What happened? Fill in all the omitted facts.

He was on the Moon when he lost consciousness. Indeed very far away from civilization.
If he hadn't have a hat (i.e. his pressurized helmet) he would have died.
The horse story is part of his other job.

This certainly plausible though a bit too predictable. Your answer is certainly a part of the intended one. He could've realized this w/o loosing consciousness. No problem. So, something must've happened while he was asleep. But what?
